FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Pacific led from start to finish on their way to securing a non-conference men's basketball victory at home, topping the Occidental Tigers 70-56 on Sunday afternoon at the Stoller Center.
It was the fourth consecutive victory for the Boxers, who improved to 7-3 on the season. The Tigers, who came to Oregon on a six-game winning streak, dropped to 6-3 on the season. They also fell to Willamette on Saturday night.
The Boxers scored the first basket of the game on a soft inside shot by
Skyler Burgess and they would never trail after that. The Tigers tied the game twice in the first half (9-9 and 11-11), but a
Michael Joseph three-pointer put Pacific back up 14-11 and they remained first on the scoreboard the rest of the afternoon.
Rafe King came off the bench to lead the Boxers with 14 points and
K.C. Harrison joined him in double figures with 10 points. Three Pacific players had nine points each —
D.J. Christian,
DeVon Pouncey and
J.T. Campbell. Pouncey and Campbell came off the bench as well. The Boxers hit 9 of 26 three-point attempts.
In the first half, the Boxers would hold a lead of 13 points five different times before settling for a 38-29 lead at intermission. In the second half, the Tigers would cut the Boxer lead to six points on two different occasions, but each time the home team answered with a three-pointer to pull away--one by King and another by Campbell.
Occidental's Jay Miller led all scorers with 24 points. Teammate Andrew Johnson added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Next action for the Boxers will be another non-conference encounter on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at Portland Bible. Start time is 7 p.m.
