Boxers Drop Pair of Close Games at BYU-Hawaii

LAIE, Hawaii – The Pacific softball team battled into extra innings on Friday against BYU-Hawaii, but the homestanding Seasiders scratched out a pair of close victories at the BYU-Hawaii Softball Field.

Kaitlyn Shikada (Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii) finished the opening game with a strong performance at the plate, which included a leadoff home run in the fifth inning. Game two saw Kylee Yamamoto (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii) drive in a run in a 2-3 day at the plate.

Pacific's Hawaiian trip wraps up on Sunday with a doubleheader at Hawaii Pacific scheduled for 2 p.m. PST.

Game One: BYU-Hawaii 4, Pacific 3 (9 innings)
Shikada hit her second home run of the season, in a 2-4 effort at the plate, as the Boxers fell in nine innings to the BYU-Hawaii Seasiders in the opening game of a doubleheader.

The scoring got going in the top of the first when with two outs Quirena Natividad (Jr., Waipahu, Hawaii) singled through the right side. Natividad tested the arm of BYU-Hawaii catcher Makaela Williamson and stole second, only to score when Williamson overthrew her attempt to catch Natividad stealing.

Pacific's one-run lead extended to two runs in the top of the second when Margaret Bachmeier (So., Newberg, Ore.) hit a double down the leftfield line with one out. A two-out single to center from Kiera Melton (Sr., Pleasanton, Calif.) allowed Bachmeier to reach home for the Boxers' second run of the game.

BYU-Hawaii responded with a run in the bottom of the second after a bases loaded fielder's choice plated Brittany Vasquez.

Pacific threatened in the third when Rachel Roberts (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) singled, before stealing second and third, but a double play wrapped up the inning for the Seasiders defense.

Erin Shick (Fr., San Diego, Calif.), who entered the game as a reliever, sat BYU-Hawaii down in order in the bottom of the fourth as the two sides battled for two full scoreless innings.

The top of the fifth started with a bang as Shikada hit her second home run of the season, but the bang was short lived as Shikdada's solo homer was followed by three-straight outs to end the inning.

Sarah Captain led the fifth inning off for the Seasiders with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Whitley Haimin. A double from Josey Walker scored Captain. Walker scored to tie the game at 3-3 three hitters later on a fielders choice.

Neither team was able to plate a run in the seventh inning, before the first frame of extra innings proved scoreless for both sides. Pacific saw a double play end its opportunity in the top of the ninth.

Courtney Hiruko led off the ninth with a single for the Seasiders and was bunted over to second by a Kalynn Latu sacrifice. A single from Vasquez ended the opening game in the bottom of the ninth as the Seasiders sailed away with a 4-3 victory.

Game Two: BYU-Hawaii 3, Pacific 1
Jessica Hotaling (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) struck out three for Pacific in the circle, while Yamamoto finished game two 2-3 at the plate with a RBI as the Boxers fell to the Seasiders.

The Seasiders plated the opening run of the second game when Walker homered to left field in the first inning. Vasquez helped add to the run total in the bottom of the third with a single up the middle to score Hiruko.

Pacific climbed onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when Ashley Mitchell (Jr., Redmond, Wash.) drew a one-out walk and scored three pitches later when Yamamoto tripled to right center.

BYU-Hawaii responded to Pacific's one run fourth inning with one of their own before the two sides battled scoreless for the remaining three innings to secure a 3-1 victory for the Seasiders.
