Melton Drives In Pair As Boxers Split With Sharks

KANEOHE, Hawaii – Led by multi-hit games from six different players the Pacific softball team recorded a doubleheader split with the Hawaii Pacific Sharks on Sunday at Howard A. Okita Field.

Kylee Yamamoto (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii) led Pacific at the plate on Sunday with a pair of two-hit games and two runs batted-in over the two-game set as the Boxers fell 4-3 in game one and won the second game of the twin bill 5-4.

Jessica Hotaling (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) notched her second win of the season in the game two victory.

Once back on the mainland, Pacific will open its home schedule on Wednesday with a double header against Northwest Christian scheduled for a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Game One: Hawaii Pacific 4, Pacific 3
Yamamoto was 2-3 with one run batted-in during the Boxers' 4-3 game one loss to the Sharks.

The Sharks struck first in the bottom of the third when Chelsea Cramer doubled downt he right field line and advanced to third on a fielding error. Cramer was eventually able to score as Pacific recorded the second out of the frame.

Both teams placed runners on base in the fourth, but neither team was able to push a run across the plate until the top of the sixth when Pacific opened the frame with a Rachel Roberts (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) walk.

A fielder's choice retired Roberts, but Jordan Schmerbauch (So., Mililani, Hawaii) reached first safely and was soon standing on third after a double by Quirena Natividad (Jr., Waipahu, Hawaii).

Schmerbauch scored on a Kylee Oshiro (Sr., Aiea, Hawaii) ground out, while Natividad scampered to third. A single to left from Yamamoto would plate Natividad to give Pacific a 2-1 lead.

The Boxers added to their lead in the top of the seventh when Margaret Bachmeier (So., Newberg, Ore.) led off the inning with a single to left, before being bunted over to second by Kaitlyn Shikada (Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii).

A pinch-hit single by Marissa Reichard (So., Forest Grove, Ore.) put runners on the corners, for Roberts. With one out and runners on first and second, Roberts delivered a sacrifice fly to center to give Pacific a 3-1 lead over Hawaii Pacific.

After recording the final out of the seventh on defense, Hawaii Pacific started the bottom of the inning with Kayla Sanchez reaching on an error. Pinch runner Kristy Washizaki headed to second on a one-out Cramer walk.

A second pinch runner for the Sharks entered the game as Sienna Santiago took over for Cramer. The Sharks took advantage of the pinch runners when with two outs, Toni Baysa doubled to left center to tie the game 3-3. Baysa would score a batter later on a walk-off single by Kiana Wolfe.

Game Two: Pacific 5, Hawaii Pacific 4
Kiera Melton (Sr., Pleasanton, Calif.) was a perfect 2-2 from the plate with two runs batted-in as the Boxers toppled the Sharks 5-4 in the second game of the afternoon.

After a leadoff groundout, the Boxers offense got going on a double to right center by Trisha Snydar (Fr., Lyden, Wash.), who would advance to third on a wild pitch. Snydar would cross the plate and open the scoring for the game on a single through the left side by Oshiro.

Pacific shut the Sharks down in order in both the first and second inning before Snydar again started the offense with a one-out single to left. A fielding error allowed Natividad to reach safely and for Snydar to head to second.

With Snydar and Natividad on base, Oshiro singled to left to load the bases. A fielder's choice saw Snydar out at the plate, but allowed Yamamoto to reload the bases as she scampered safely to first. A fielding error kept the bases loaded and pushed Natividad across the plate for the first run of the inning, before Melton was hit by a pitch that also saw Oshiro score.

The Boxers 3-0 lead increased to four at the top of the fourth inning, when a two-out double from Natividad scored Hotaling, who had drawn a walk earlier in the inning.

Pacific was unable to keep the Sharks completely off the board in the bottom of the fourth, where Hawaii Pacific put a pair of runners on through a single and a fielder's choice. With one-out and two runners on-base, a Cramer double plated a pair and after reaching third on a groundout, Cramer scored on a single to center by Nicole Viena to pull the Sharks within a run of Pacific.

The top of the fifth saw Pacific add an insurance run when Yamamoto singled and advanced on a groundout by Shikada. Melton doubled to left center to drive-in Yamamoto for the Boxers' fifth and final run of the day.

Hawaii Pacific pushed across a single run in the sixth inning, while the Boxers saw Alyssa Burns (Fr., El Dorado Hills, Calif.) dig herself out of a jam in the circle by forcing Dorian Acierto to ground out with two Sharks on base, securing Pacific's 5-4 road victory over Hawaii Pacific.
