Boxers Sweep Beacons In Home Opening Twin Bill

FOREST GROVE – Scoring 14 runs on the day, the Pacific softball team earned a sweep over the visiting Northwest Christian Beacons in the first home doubleheader of the season at Sherman/Larkins Stadium.

A trio of Boxers drove in three runs each in the Boxers' 7-2 game one victory, while a five-run fifth inning pushed the Boxers to a 7-4 win in the second game of the Wednesday twin bill.

The Boxers continue their homestand on Saturday with a doubleheader against Northwest University, set to open at noon.

Game One: Pacific 7, Northwest Christian 2
Marissa Reichard (Jr., Forest Grove, Ore.) struck out six in a starting effort, while Rachel Roberts (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.), Ashley Mitchell (Jr., Redmond, Wash.) and Kylee Yamamoto (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii) all drove in two runs in the Boxers' 7-2 game one victory over the Beacons.

Randi Kostner opened the game for the Beacons with a single through the right side, before advancing to second on a one-out single by Addy Hoskins. After Reichard struck out her second Beacon of the inning, a two-out error allowed Kostner to plate the first run of the evening.

The Boxers responded to the Beacons opening-inning run with four after Roberts drew a leadoff walk. A single to left from Trisha Anydar pushed Roberts to second base. A throwing error allowed Roberts and Snydar to advance, only to find themselves headed across the plate on a two-run double to center by Yamamoto.

Following Yamamoto's two-out double was Mitchell, who homered to right center and gave Pacific a 4-1 lead after one inning.

Pacific continued it's offensive outburst in the bottom of the second when Megan Winans (Jr., Hood River, Ore.) singled to left center and advanced to second as Jordan Schmerbauch (So., Mililani, Hawaii) reached on a fielders choice. Neither Winans or Schmerbauch remained on base long as Roberts pushed the pair across the plate on a triple to left center.

The Beacons responded with a one-run third inning as Parker Bonife singled with two-outs before a pinch runner scored on a double from Taylor Medley.

The two offenses remained quiet until the sixth when Roberts reached on a fielding error and promptly stole second. After Snydar was hit by a pitch, a double steal and a throwing error saw Roberts score the final run of the game as a double play and popup ended Pacific's final trip to the plate.

Roberts finished the opening game 2-3, with two runs and two RBI. On the bases, Roberts swiped three bags to up her season total to 11. Winans was 2-2 at the plate in the opener and hit her second double of the year.

In the circle, Reichard struck out six in five innings, while Alyssa Burns (Fr., El Dorado Hills, Calif.) struck out one in two innings of relief.

Game Two: Pacific 7, Northwest Christian 4
Jessica Hotaling (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) was 3-4 at the dish, while also earning a victory in the circle for Pacific in a 7-4 game two victory over Northwest Christian.

The Boxers were forced to come from behind in the second game of the evening after Kostner reached on an error, only to score later in the inning on a double by Bonife.

Northwest Christian continued to add to its run total in the second when Madi Novelli drew a two-out walk and scored on a double to right center off the bat of Katelin Downes. The second Beacons run of the frame came as Downes scored on a single by Jill Suratt.

The Beacons' lone run of the third was the result of a leadoff home run by Bonife, giving Northwest Christian a 4-0 lead after two and a half innings.

Two quick outs in the third looked to give momentum to the Beacons defense in the bottom of the third, but Hotaling tripled to right center and scampered home on a double from Quirena Natividad (Jr., Waipahu, Hawaii). Kylee Oshiro (Sr., Aiea, Hawaii) singled to right to score Natividad before the inning ended on a Pacific pop up.

The biggest frame of the day came in the fifth inning as Hotaling singled and Roberts was called out on interference. Hotaling swiped second base and scored on a triple to center from Natividad. The second run came as Oshiro reached on a fielders choice and Natividad scored ahead of Northwest Christian's attempts to retire the Boxer.

Sitting tied 4-4, with one out in the bottom of the fifth, Yamamoto walked and pinch runner Schmerbauch moved up a base to second. Mitchell singled to center to score Schmerbauch and forced the Beacons to make a pitching change.

Following the pitching change, Mitchell stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error that would see Yamamoto score for the Boxers.

The final run of the inning was recorded when Kiera Melton singled to left and plated Mitchell.

After a scoreless sixth, Hotaling sat the Beacons down in order during the seventh and left their home diamond with a 7-4 victory.

Natividad and Oshrio each drove-in a pair in the Boxers' game two victory. Hotaling struckout three Beacons in five innings of relief, which saw her earn her third victory of the season.
