Boxers Ground Eagles In Home Doubleheader Sweep

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – For the second straight home-date, the Pacific softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep as the Boxers topped Northwest 3-2 in game one and 5-2 in game two at Sherman/Larkins Stadium.

Rachel Roberts (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) finished the opener 3-4 with two stolen bases, while Marissa Reichard (Jr., Forest Grove, Ore.) struck out eight to earn her third win of the season.

Game two saw Quirena Natividad (Jr., Waipahu, Hawaii) drive in a pair and Alyssa Burns (Fr., El Dorado Hills, Calif.) pickup her first collegiate victory in a game two relief appearance.

The Boxers open conference play on Feb. 28, with a home doubleheader at 12 p.m. against the Puget Sound Loggers.

Game One: Pacific 3, Northwest 2
Reichard struckout eight in a four-hit complete game victory and helped herself out at the plate with the eventual-game winning RBI, as the Boxers edged the Eagles 3-2 in the opening game of the day.

After Reichard sat the Eagles down in-order during the opening inning, Pacific opened the bottom of the first with a bunt single from Roberts. With one out, Roberts swiped both second base and third base.

Kylee Yamamoto (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii) joined Roberts on the bases with a walk and promptly stole second. A groundout served as the second out for Pacific, but the Boxers were not finished in the first as Ashley Mitchell (Jr., Redmond, Wash.) doubled to right center on a 2-1 count to plate Roberts and Yamamoto.

A wild pitch saw Mitchell advance to third, before the final out was recorded on a 2-0 Pacific lead after one full inning.

After Pacific's two-run first inning, neither team managed to push a runner beyond second base until the bottom of the fourth when Cindy Chan (Fr., Torrance, Calif.) delivered a two-strike single to right. A pair of groundouts allowed Chan to advance to third, where she would score on a single to left center by Reichard.

The Boxers lone run in the fourth proved to be the game winning run, as Ricki Tacdol led the top of the seventh off with a single to right center for Northwest. A dropped fly ball from the Boxers allowed pinch runner Courtney Gain to score and for Savannah Rush to scamper to third for the Eagles. Rush was tagged out at the plate, while attempting to score as Janey Ganta reached on the fielder's choice.

After Ganta stole second and reached third on a groundout, Northwest would score its final run of the game on a single to left center by Bethany Bacon. A double by Cara Cristion put runners on second and third, but Reichard worked herself out of the inning with a strikeout of Katelin Lewis to end the game.

Game Two: Pacific 5, Northwest 2
Natividad drove-in two runs, while Roberts stole her 14th base of the season in Pacific's 5-2 win in Saturday's second game.

After four and a half scoreless innings, the Boxers exploded in the bottom of the fifth for five runs as Winans opened the frame with a first-pitch double and prompted a Northwest pitching change.

A sac bunt from Kaitlyn Shikada (Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii) moved Winans to third, where she would score on a double by Kiera Melton (Sr., Pleasanton, Calif.). Roberts reached first on a dropped third strike and advanced to second on a fielding error that allowed Jessica Hotaling (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) to reach first safely.

With the bases loaded, Natividad drove-in two runs on a one-out double. The bases were loaded again as Kylee Oshiro (Sr., Aiea, Hawaii) drew an intentional walk and Caitlyn Ramiscal (Fr., Kapolei, Hawaii) pinch-ran for Oshiro. Yamamoto walked with the bases loaded, which plated Hotaling and forced another Northwest pitching change.

Following the pitching change, Mitchell singled up the middle to score Natividad for Pacific's fifth and final run of the inning.

Kelli Peckham reached first on a fielder's choice before advancing to third on a two-out double by Cristion and scoring on a single from Lexie Robbins. Cristion looked to score on Robbins' single, but was thrown out at the dish by Yamamoto in centerfield.

The bottom of the seventh saw the Eagles load the bases with one-out. After starting the game in the pitching circle for the Boxers, Hotaling returned in relief and quickly recorded the second out on a sacrifice fly that scored Gain. Following the Eagles' sac fly, Hotaling won an eight-pitch battle with Rush as Hotaling forced a pop-up to wrap-up the game.

Burns picked-up a win in two innings of relief work.
