Boxers Triple Their Way To Twinbill Split With PLU

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

TACOMA, Wash. – A first game pitcher's duel gave way to a Pacific slugfest Saturday as the Boxers split their Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader with No. 23 ranked Pacific Lutheran at the PLU Field.

In the opener, the Lutes scored the winning run in the ninth inning as both teams used errors for all of their offense in a 2-1 PLU victory.  The Boxers came alive at the plate in the second game, pounding out 19 hits and four triples en route to the 13-6 win.

Tanner Mansell (Jr., Lakeport, Calif.) led the Boxers offensively, finishing with four hits and three runs in the doubleheader.  He had the Boxers' only hit in the opener and went 3 for 5 in the nightcap.

With the split, Pacific improved to 2-6, 1-4 NWC.  Pacific Lutheran saw their record move to 9-4, 3-2 NWC.  The two teams will play the final game of the series on Sunday at noon.

GAME 1: PACIFIC LUTHERAN 2, PACIFIC 1
For the second straight week, Kyle Treadway (Sr., Phoenix, Ore.) engaged in another pitcher's duel, this time going the distance against Pacific Lutheran's Chris Bishop.  Treadway allowed just six hits and three walks while striking out eight.  Bishop threw an absolute gem, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out six.

All three runs in the game would score thanks to errors, with the Boxers and Lutes combining for seven miscues in the contest.  The Lutes opened the bottom of the third when Brett Johnson reached on an error and was moved to second and third on ground outs before scoring on Jacob Clements' single to center field.

Pacific parlayed their only hit of the game and two errors into their only run in the fifth.  Tanner Mansell (Jr., Lakeport, Calif.) singled to open the frame and advanced to second on a fielding error.  He advanced to third on Taren Bradd's (Jr., Medford, Ore.) ground out and scored when Nathan Suyematsu (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) reached base on an error.

The Lutes' winning ninth began when Landon Packard reached base on an error to lead off the inning.  Pinch-runner Bo Pearson advanced to second on Connor Cantu's sacrifice bunt and went to third on Johnson's single through the right side.  After the Boxers walked Ben Welch intentionally to load the bases, Pearson scored the winning run on Curtis Wildung's sacrifice fly to center field.

Treadway fell to 1-2 on the season, while Bishop improved to 1-1 on the year.  Clements and Packard each had two hits to lead PLU at the plate.

GAME 2: PACIFIC 13, PACIFIC LUTHERAN 6
Pacific belted out a season-high 19 hits in the contest, which included eight extra base hits and an unusual four triples.  Mansell led off the game with the first triple of the game and scored on Donnie Bradley's (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) single up the middle.  Bradley later scored on Tyler Brown's (Fr., Tucson, Ariz.) single to left.

The two teams traded runs in the second before the Boxers put three more runs on the scoreboard in the third.  JT Francies (Jr., Greeley, Colo.) scored two with his triple down the left field line and Fernando Careaga (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) added a RBI with a ground out.

The Lutes brought the game within 6-5 with a four-run bottom of the third.  Two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out for Collin Nilson, whose single to center field scored Packard.  Tyler Thompson added two when his double to center field scored Clements and Packard and Kit Banko followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Nilson.

Things stayed quiet after that until the Boxers exploded for a seven-run sixth inning.  Careaga ripped the first pitch of the inning for a triple to right and Treadway, in as a pinch hitter, scored hi on a single up the middle.  Suyematsu followed with a single up the left side and Mansell scored Treadway on a single through the right side.

Bradley drove in the frame's fourth run with a suicide squeeze that scored Suyematsu before Brown scored Bradley and Walker Olis (Jr., Burlington, Wash.) with the second triple of the inning.  Francies picked up his third RBI when he doubled to left to score Brown.  The Lutes would come back to score one run in the bottom of the ninth.

Joey Angyus (Fr., Portland, Ore.) picked up his first collegiate win in relief, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one in three innings of work.  Tyler Kotchik (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) earned his second save, allowing one run on two hits in 3.2 innings.  Kort Skota took the loss for PLU, allowing three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.  Bradley led Pacific offensively, going 3 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs.  Mansell finished the game going 3 for 5 with two runs and a RBI.  Both Nilson and Thompson went 2 for 4 to lead PLU.
