Box ScoreTACOMA, Wash. – After being outslugged by Pacific in Saturday's second game, Pacific Lutheran wasted no time putting runs on the board to back up a masterful pitching performance in a 14-0 shutout of the Boxers in Northwest Conference baseball action at the PLU Field.
Â
The Lutes (10-4, 4-2 NWC) scored six runs in the first inning and three in the second inning, doing more than enough to back-up a one-hitter by pitcher Kyle Rossman. The Lutes' starter allowed just two batters over the minimum, allowing the one hit and one walk while striking out eight.
Â
The Boxers (2-7, 1-5 NWC) had their lone hit in the first inning, when
Donnie Bradley (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) stroked a one-out single to center field. He would advance to second when
Walker Olis (Jr., Burlington, Wash.) walked, but
Tyler Brown (Fr., Tucson, Ariz.) hit into a double play and Pacific would not put another on base the rest of the day.
Â
PLU chased Pacific starter
Jon Inman (Fr., Canby, Ore.) before an out was recorded in the bottom of the first. Ben Welch led off with a double to center, Tanner Williams drove him in with a double down the left field line and Williams scored on Jacob Clements' single to left field. Reliever
Nate Montgomery (Jr., Sherwood, Ore.) succeeded in notching the first out of the inning, but Tyler Thompson followed with a RBI single to left that scored Clements. A walk and a bunt single loaded the bases for Brett Johnson, who drew the walk to make it a 4-0 lead.
Â
Reliever
Wyatt Moore (Fr., Riverside, Calif.) allowed Welch his second hit of the inning, a two-RBI single to left before coaxing Williams into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Â
Drew Oord started scoring in the Lutes' three-run second with a single to left center that scored Nilson and Thompson. Curtis Wildung added a single through the right side to plate Packard. The Lutes added two more on a RBI double by Johnson and a single by Welch and two more in the fifth Thompson's homer to left. PLU scored one in the sixth when a sacrifice fly scored Welch.
Â
Inman dropped to 0-2 on the season, allowing three runs on three hits. Welch and Nilson each went 3 for 4 to lead the Lutes at the plate, with Welch adding a double, three RBIs and two runs.
Â
Pacific returns home for four games this week. The Boxers will host Corban for a non-conference game on Wednesday at 6 p.m., before hosting Puget Sound for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
