Lanz Rattles Cage Five Times in Boxers' 14-3 Win

FOREST GROVE – In the first official Northwest Conference women's lacrosse match, the Boxers were led by a five-goal outing from April Lanz in a 14-3 home victory over the visiting Puget Sound Loggers at Hanson Stadium.

Lanz (So., Oregon City, Ore.) opened her scoring account less than two minutes into the season opener as she collected a pass from Kara Smouse (Jr., Portland, Ore.) and beat Puget Sound's Hailey Palmore for the days' opening goal.

The Boxers promptly doubled their goal total when Amy Mayhugh (Sr., Tigard, Ore.) controlled the ensuing draw. After roughly 30 seconds ticked off the clock Lanz provided an assist on Paisley Hiefield's (So., Portland, Ore.) first goal of the year.

Pacific's next two goals came less than two minutes after Hiefield's goal with the third of the game coming at 27:07 in the first period as Smouse and Lanz hooked up once again for Lanz's second goal of the afternoon.

With 26:20 left in the opening half, Mayhugh found the back of the cage for her first goal of the season with what would turn out to be the game winner.

A Puget Sound timeout slowed Pacific down for a span of four minutes, which saw Adrienne Salzwedel (So., Beaverton, Ore.) called into action for the first time as the Pacific goalkeeper was forced to make a save on a Kerri Smith shot with 25:23 left in the period.

Salzwedel notched her second save two minutes later before Pacific successfully cleared the ball into its offensive third. A shot by Lanz ricocheted off of Palmore, allowing Lanz to grab a ground ball and find teammate Meg Chapman (So., Woodinville, Wash.) who saw her shot clang off the post. Lanz recovered the rebound and drew a free position opportunity on a Riley Weidle foul and successfully recorded Pacific's first free position goal of the year.

Hiefield made it 6-0 with a free position goal at 20:18, while Smouse tallied her first goal of the year at 16:24 remaining in the opening half.

Puget Sound looked to push the attack after Smith controlled Puget Sound's third-straight draw, but Smith promptly placed her shot wide of the goal. Turnovers from each side saw Roxy Krietzman pickup a ground ball and draw a foul near the goal to earn a free position. Krietzman executed her free position chance for the Loggers' first goal of the day.

A groundball pickup and clearance for Pacific followed Puget Sound's next foray into the offensive end and soon after turned into a scoring chance for Lanz as she turned a Hiefield assist into her fourth goal of the day.

Mayhugh controlled the ensuing draw for the Boxers as Pacific held an 8-1 lead, but a turnover and a Maddie Soukup ground ball set-up a Callie Holgate goal for the Loggers with 11:22 on the clock.

Chapman made-up for her earlier shot off the post shortly after Puget Sound's second goal, with her first goal of the year off an assist from Abby Talboy (Jr., Boise, Idaho).

Pacific's 9-2 lead held until the halftime buzzer sounded shortly after Palmore saved a Nicki Leeming (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) shot with five seconds remaining.

Just like the opening period started, Pacific started the second period with a draw control and a Lanz goal, as she struck for her fifth and final goal of the day.

Leeming tallied her first goal of the year with 24:57 left in regulation as her man-down goal put Pacific up 11-2, before Mayhugh scored another man-down goal for the Boxers 11 seconds later.

With 17:15 left in the second half, Leeming scored a second goal following her own ground ball pickup.

Holgate scored Puget Sound's third and final goal of the game with 15:01 left in the game.

After nearly 12 minutes of scoreless action, Mayhugh drew a free position opportunity and finished her hat trick to score the Boxers' 14th goal of the day, which capped off Pacific's 14-3 season opening victory.

Lanz led Pacific with five goals, while Mayhugh chipped in three. Hiefield and Leeming each netted a pair in the opener to go along with one-goal efforts from Smouse and Chapman.

Smouse finished the day with two assists.

Mayhugh led the Boxers off the draw with six draw controls and also finished, alongside Chapman, with a team-high five caused turnovers. Chapman and Mahea Wong (Jr., Lake Stevens, Wash.) led Pacific with six ground balls each.

In goal, Salzwedel picked up her first victory of the season in a 10-save effort.

The Boxers hit the road for the first time in 2015 on March 7, with a 3 p.m. scheduled first draw at Linfield.
