Box ScoreLOS ANGELES – A valiant comeback in the later innings for Pacific was not enough to overcome a six-run hole Sunday as Occidental scored early for an 11-7 victory from the Boxers and took the three-game series in baseball action at Anderson Field.
Â
Nathan Suyematsu (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) led Pacific (1-2) with two hits and a RBI, but the Boxers found themselves limited at the plate early with just two hits in the first six innings. The Tigers (2-1) saw Deon DeRaad go 3 for 4 with three runs, three RBIs and two home runs.
Â
The Tigers broke the game open early, going off for six runs in the first as the first six batters all reached base. Charlie Caccamo was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Jonathan Brooks drew a walk and Victor Munoz delivered a single to center field that scored Caccamo. DeRaad made it 2-0 when his bunt single scored Brooks and A.J. Libunao loaded the bases with another bunt single.
Â
Jonathan Wong made it a 4-0 lead when he doubled to left center, scoring Munoz and DeRaad and chasing Pacific starter
Paul Wolfram (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev.) from the game. Walker Marks hit a sacrifice fly to score Libunao and Chris Strain made it 6-0 when his single scored Wong. The Tigers would load the bases one more time against reliever
Dylan Miller (Fr., Corvallis, Ore.) but an infield pop-up put the attack to an end.
Â
DeRaad made it a 7-0 game for the Tigers in the second inning when he hit a solo home run to right field, his third homer of the series.
Â
Pacific put it's first run on the board in fourth when
Tanner Mansell (Jr., Lakeport, Calif.) singled with one out and later scored on
Tyler Brown's (Fr., Tucson, Ariz.) ground out. The Tigers added two more runs in the fifth when an error plated Strain and Walker Marks.
Â
The Boxers then cut the lead in half with a two-out, four-run rally in the sixth.Â
Fernando Careaga (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) and
Taren Bradd (Jr., Medford, Ore.) opened the scoring with both coming home when
Kyle Treadway (Sr., Phoenix, Ore.) reached on an error. Treadway and
Austin Florez (Fr., South Jordan, Utah) added two more when Suyematsu reached on an error.
Â
Occidental added two more runs in the eighth when DeRadd hammered his fourth homer of the series to straight away center field. The Boxers equaled the effort in the top of the ninth, with Wright scoring on an error and
JT Francies (Jr., Greeley, Colo.) plating on a single by Suyematsu.
Â
Will Nahmens earned the win for Occidental in relief of starter Nolan Watson, pitching the Tigers through the fifth inning. Watson allowed one run on three hits in four innings of work. Wolfram took the loss for the Boxers, allowing six runs on four hits.
Â
Pacific is off next weekend and will start Northwest Conference play on Feb. 21 and 22, hosting George Fox for a three-game series at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.
