Boxers' Crazy Eights Score Twinbill Sweep Of Pioneers

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. – Blame it on the rain or blame it on the outstanding hitting of Ben Duerr (Jr., Lebanon, Ore.) and Fernando Careaga (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.), but Pacific finally benefitted from the big innings Sunday to secure a doubleheader sweep of Lewis & Clark in Northwest Conference baseball action at the Huston Sports Complex.

Careaga went 4 for 4 for the Boxers in the opener with three RBIs while Duerr went 3 for 6 and hit in a pair to open a six-run eighth inning to lead Pacific to a 10-7 come-from-behind win in the opener.  In the second game, Duerr went 3 for 4 and had the Boxers' first home run of the season to stake the Boxers to a four-run eighth as the Boxers rolled to a 9-3 victory.

Duerr finished the day hitting 6 for 7 in the two games with the homer, four RBIs, four runs and a double as the Boxers belted out 26 hits in the two games despite rainy and windy conditions.  Careaga, making his first start of the season, finished the day going 6 for 8 with five RBIs, three runs and a double.

With the victories, Pacific improved to 4-12 overall, 3-8 NWC, while Lewis & Clark dropped to 3-15, 2-6 NWC.  The doubleheader, originally scheduled for Saturday, was pushed to Sunday due to rain.  The two teams will complete the three-game series on Monday, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.

GAME 1: PACIFIC 10, LEWIS & CLARK 7
Pacific did their part to back up ace Kyle Treadway (Sr., Phoenix, Ore.) early, scoring two runs in the top of the first.  Donnie Bradley (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) laid down a bunt single with one out, moved to second on Nathan Suyematsu's (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) single to center field and scored on Walker Olis' (Jr., Burlington, Wash.) sacrifice fly.  Suyematsu later scored on a single to right by Tanner Mansell (Jr., Lakeport, Calif.).

The Pioneers took one run back in the second as Sean Shepherd reached on an error and scored on a single by Akira Abderrahman, but the Boxers rallied to score two in the top of the fifth when Careaga hit a two-out single to center field that scored Suyematsu and Bradley.

Lewis & Clark came back, though, and forced the Boxers to play from behind in the later innings.  In the bottom of the fifth, Ben Beck reached on an error, Nick Lockwood singled to right and both scored on ground outs.  The Pioneers took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh.  Beck doubled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Tommy Massari's single to center field.  Michael Kinkenon reached on a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Shepherd.

Austin Gallagher (Sr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) opened the six-run Pacific eighth with a single.  Cole Kanazawa (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) walked two batters later and both scored on Duerr's double.  Bradley and Olis walked to load the bases, allowing Careaga to give the Boxers the lead for good when his single scored Duerr.  Wyatt Moore (Fr., Riverside, Calif.) added the punctuation mark when he hit a three-RBI double to left field that all but closed the door on the game.  Lewis & Clark rallied for one run in the bottom of the ninth.

Treadway improved to 2-3 on the season as he allowed six runs, three earned, on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.  Tyler Kotchik (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) earned his third save of the year, allowing one run on three hits over the final two innings.  Ben Beck took the loss in relief for Lewis & Clark, allowing four runs on three hits in the eighth.  Careaga's four-hit performance paced Pacific while EJ Hand finished with three hits to lead L&C.

GAME 2: PACIFIC 9, LEWIS & CLARK 3
Pacific again benefitted from being first on the scoreboard, scoring single runs in the second, third and fourth.  Bradley singled with one out in the second and scored on Careaga's double down the right field line.  Duerr singled with two out in the third and scored on a Lewis & Clark error.  Careaga notched a one-out single to third base in the fourth and scored on a ground out.

The Boxers added two runs in the fifth for a 5-0 lead.  Duerr was hit by a pitch, Matt Hopp (Sr., Portland, Ore.) singled to right and Suyematsu walked to load the bases.  Bradley was then hit by a pitch to drive home the first run before a Careaga ground out scored Hopp.

Lewis & Clark replied with a three-run bottom of the fifth to come back within striking distance.  Shepherd reached on a fielder's choice, Massari followed with a double and both scored on Connor Eggleston's single to left.  Carter Bagley then scored Eggleston with a single up the middle.

After a quiet sixth and seventh innings, the Boxers came alive again for another big eighth inning.  Careaga reached when he was hit by a pitch, Danny Yazzolino (So., Portland, Ore.) walked and both scored on Kanazawa's double to left center field.  Duerr followed with the Boxers' first home run of the season, a two-run shot that tallied the final scores of the afternoon.

Colin McCusker (Sr., Olympia, Wash.) earned his first win of the season in relief, allowing just four hits in 4.1 innings of work.  Joey Angyus (Fr., Portland, Ore.) was solid in the no-decision in his first start of the year, allowing three unearned runs on four hits with five strikeouts in 4.2 innings.  Aaron Landecker took the loss in relief for Lewis & Clark, allowing two runs while facing three batters in the eighth.  Duerr's 3 for 4 performance led Pacific.  Massari's 2 for 3 paced Lewis & Clark.
