Boxers Slay Knights 15-9 as Mayhugh Scores Six

FOREST GROVE – A six goal and 11 draw control evening from Amy Mayhugh helped pace Pacific at Hanson Stadium, as the Boxers topped the Calvin Knights 15-9 on Thursday evening.

The Knights saw Emily Cefartti score the opener at 28:13, before Krista Cave (Fr., Martinez, Calif.) controlled the following draw and helped Pacific earn its first look on goal. A free position shot from Pacific missed the mark, but a successful clearance by Calvin was soon erased as Nicki Leeming (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) caused an Erin Leegwater turnover.

Leeming picked up the ground ball and led the Boxers to a clearance and eventually drew a free position shot, which she converted for Pacific's first goal of the night. The second goal of the evening for Pacific came with 26:07 on the clock when Mayhugh (Sr., Tigard, Ore.) netted her first of the game.

Calvin responded to Mayhugh's goal with an Amanda Davio free position goal to tie the game 2-2 with a little over 24 minutes left in the first period.

The two teams battled without another goal until the clock hit 16:29 when Karissa Reed put the Knights ahead 3-2.

Pacific and Calvin exchanged looks over the next two minutes, but a save by Adrienne Salzwedel (So., Beaverton, Ore.) led to a successful clearance for the Boxers and a free position goal from April Lanz (So., Oregon City, Ore.) knotted the game at 3-3 with a little over 10 minutes left in the first half.

Lanz's goal set the  Boxers off on a run, which continued with goals from Abby Talboy (Jr., Boise, Idaho) and Meg Chapman (So., Woodinville, Wash.) in the final six minutes that gave the Boxers a 5-3 lead at the halftime break.

The Boxers' hot run continued into the second period as Leeming assisted on a goal from Mayhugh less than a minute into the half and Mayhugh scored an unassisted goal with 27:24 on the clock to give Pacific a 7-3 advantage over the Knights.

Cefaratti broke the Boxers' scoring run at 23:42, but a Mayhugh draw control soon turned into a Paisley Hiefield (So., Portland, Ore.) free position chance, which Hiefield converted for her 12th goal of the season.

Mayhugh struck again at 19:13, less than a minute before Lanz scored the game-winning goal against the man-down Knights. Calvin's fifth goal came from Reed on a man-up opportunity, followed by a Pacific goal from Lanz and a Davio tally for the Knights. Carolyn Forbes made it two-straight goals for Calvin before Mayhugh gave the Boxers a 12-7 lead with 13:32 left in regulation.

The eighth Calvin goal of the night was quickly countered by a Mayhugh's sixth goal of the game and 27th of the season at 11:45. Chapman and Lanz tallied the final two goals of the night for Pacific, before Reed added Calvin's ninth and final goal with 1:57 on the clock.

Mayhugh managed a ground ball with 52 seconds left, before Pacific was able to run-out the clock on a 15-9 home victory.

Salzwedel notched six saves in-front of the cage, while the Pacific defense caused 14 Calvin turnovers.

Talboy led Pacific on the evening with four ground balls and also caused two turnovers on the defensive end.

Mayhugh finished with 11 draw controls, six goals, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and an assist, while Lanz tallied four goals on the evening. Chapman scored twice and the trio of Hiefield, Leeming and Talboy all found the back of the cage once.

Pacific next plays host to the Oberlin Yeowomen on March 27 at 2 p.m.
