Game One |
Game TwoFOREST GROVE – The offense that Pacific found in the Lewis & Clark series carried over to their series with Linfield on Saturday, but the Wildcats' offense was just a little better as they swept a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader from the Boxers at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.
Â
The Wildcats broke the opening game open with single runs in the fourth and fifth and then added three in the seventh to take the opener by a 5-2 score. Pacific led the second game 2-0 after the first inning before Linfield rebounded to score eight in the final five innings to roll on to the 8-3 win.
Â
Walker Olis (So., Burlington, Wash.),
Donnie Bradley (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) and
Josh Keithly (So., Mission Viejo, Calif.) each had three hits in the doubleheader, with Olis hitting his second home run of the season in the second game.Â
Â
With the losses, Pacific dropped to 5-14, 4-10 NWC, while Linfield improved to 16-7, 6-5 NWC. The teams are scheduled to finish their three-game series on Sunday with first pitch at noon.
Â
GAME 1: LINFIELD 5, PACIFIC 2The opener proved a pitcher's duel through the first three innings, with Pacific's
Kyle Treadway (Sr., Phoenix, Ore.) and Linfield's Chris Haddeland combining to give up four hits.Â
Â
Treadway scattered single hits in each of the first three innings before the Wildcats finally broke through in the fourth as Eric Lawson doubled to lead off the frame and scored on a Jo Carroll ground out. A leadoff hit in the fifth by Ryan Ross was extended by a two-base Pacific error. Ross then scored on a single up the middle by Chance Laboda.
Â
Pacific saw scoring chances in both the fifth and sixth go unrealized.Â
Dylan Wright (Fr., Gilbert, Ariz.) picked up Pacific's second hit when he singled with one out and
Josh Keithly (So., Mission Viejo, Calif.) moved him to second with a single before
Mike Thomson (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) was coaxed into an inning-ending double play.Â
Ben Duerr (Jr., Lebanon, Ore.) doubled down the right field line with one out in sixth, but was stranded.
Â
Singles by Carroll and Alex Hendra-Brown jumpstarted a two-run Linfield rally in the top of the seventh. Caroll scored on a single to left by Ross while Hendra-Brown plated when Scott Hilpert reached on an error. Pacific took both runs back in the home half of the inning. Olis was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning,
Donnie Bradley (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) followed with a single and both scored on a single to left by Keithly.
Â
Pacific had runners on base in both the eighth and ninth, but Haddeland succeeded in keeping offense to a minimum as he improved to 4-1 on the season in his second complete game, and in the process broke the Linfield career record with his 31st victory. He allowed two runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out seven. Treadway fell to 2-4 in his second complete game effort, allowing five runs, two earned, on 11 hits with three strikeouts. Keithly's 2 for 4 at the plate with two RBIs led the Boxers. Hendra-Brown went 3 for 4 with a run to lead Linfield.
Â
GAME 2: LINFIELD 8, PACIFIC 3Pacific made some two-out noise to open the game. After Linfield starter Aaron Thomassen struck out the Boxers' first two batters, Suyematsu extended the inning with a single to center field.Â
Walker Olis (Jr., Burlington, Wash.) showed patience before he ripped a three ball, one strike pitch over the fence just to the right of the scoreboard in left center field to give the Boxers a 2-0 lead. It was Olis' second homer of the season and the fourth for the Boxers in five games.
Â
The Boxers had the makings for another two-out rally in the second. Thomassen had again struck out the first two batters of the inning when
Cole Kanazawa (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) singled and Duerr was hit by a pitch.Â
Dylan Wright (Fr., Gilbert, Ariz.) appeared to have the bases loaded when he reached on an error, but Kanazawa was put out when he rounded third base too far, ending the inning.
Â
Linfield put together a two-out rally of their own in the fifth to tie the game. Carroll led off the frame with a single to left, ending Pacific starter
Joey Angyus' (Fr., Portland, Ore.) string of 11 straight retired batters.  While he was erased with a double play, Ross reached on a walk, Loboda singled and both scored on Brady Rediger's single to left. The Wildcats took the lead in the sixth when Eric Lawson led off with a single and scored on a single through the right side by Carroll.
Â
Pacific tied things up in the bottom of the seventh when Keithly led off with a single and scored on Kanazawa's long single to center field. Linfield, however, turned an error into the winning run in the top of the eighth. Van Domelen led off by reaching on the miscue, moved to third on Ben Andrews' single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carroll.Â
Â
The Wildcats broke the game open with a four-run ninth inning, plating all of their runs with two outs. Laboda singled with one out and scored the opening run on a single by Van Domelen. Lawson followed with a single before Andrews ripped a single up the middle that scored Van Domelen and Lawson.
Â
Thomassen improved to 3-2 with the victory, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out five in seven innings of work. Garrett Miller earned his first save of the season, striking out two in two innings.Â
Tyler Kotchik (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) took the loss in relief, allowing one unearned run on two hits and struck out one in 3.1 innings. Olis, Bradley and Kanazawa each had two hits to lead the Boxers. Andrews and Carroll each went 2 for 5 with two RBIs to pace Linfield.
