Game Winning Walk Makes Suyematsu Winner Over Linfield

Box Score

FOREST GROVE – Nathan Suyematsu (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) threw a complete-game five-hitter Sunday as a game-ending walk allowed Pacific to prevent a Linfield sweep with a 3-2 win over the Wildcats in Northwest Conference baseball action at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

Suyematsu improved to 2-1 on the season with Pacific's third complete game of the season as he allowed two runs on five hits with one strikeout as he threw 105 pitches and at one point retired 14 straight batters.  The junior also helped his own cause at the plate as he went 2 for 4.

Danny Yazzolino (So., Portland, Ore.) and Cole Kanazawa (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) also went 2 for 4 while Ben Duerr (Jr., Lebanon, Ore.) went 2 for 5 to pace Pacific's 11-hit afternoon.

Pacific appeared to have the game won in the bottom of the eighth when Josh Keithly (So., Mission Viejo, Calif.) singled to lead off the inning and scored when Duerr reached on an error.  The Wildcat, however, parlayed Pacific's lone error of the day of the day into the tying run in the top of the ninth.  Corey VanDomelen led off with a double and advanced to third on an error before scoring when the Boxers threw to try and get Eric Lawson out on a steal attempt.

Walker Olis (Jr., Burlington, Wash.) started the Pacific ninth when he reached on an error before the Wildcats intentionally walked pinch-hitter Matt Hopp (Sr., Portland, Ore.) and Keithly to set up the force out at every base.  Reliever Cody Walker succeeded in striking out Yazzolino in a driving rain, but was not successful on the next batter as Kanazawa drew the bases loaded walk for the win.

Pacific saw a golden opportunity to take the early lead go unfulfilled in the first.  Duerr led off the inning with a single to left and Donnie Bradley (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) followed with a bunt single, but Linfield starter Riley Newman retired the next three batters in order to quell the threat.

Linfield opened scoring in the top of the fourth when VanDomelen hit a leadoff single up the left side, moved to third on Jo Carroll's single and scored on a single by Alex Hendra-Brown.  Pacific took the run back in the home half of the frame as Yazzolino singled with one out and scored when Duerr reached on an error.

Reliever Joseph Stevick took the loss for Linfield, falling to 1-1 on the season.  He allowed one run on two walks and struck out one in two-third of an inning.  Newman allowed two runs, one earned, in the start for Linfield on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work.  VanDomelen went 2 for 4 with two runs and a double to lead the Wildcats.

The win improved Pacific to 6-14 overall, 5-10 NWC, while Linfield dropped to 16-8, 6-6 NWC.  Pacific will enjoy spring break in southern California, traveling to take on La Verne in a four game series next weekend.
