Boxers Come From Behind To Secure Split With Leopards

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

LA VERNE, Calif. – Pacific saw one rally fall short and a second one turn up successful Saturday as the Boxers split their baseball doubleheader with La Verne at Ben Hines Field.

The Boxers and Leopards were tied 7-7 after six innings in the second game before Pacific scored three runs in the top of the eighth that stood up for a 10-7 victory.  Pacific also put together a three-run eighth in the opener, but it was not enough to erase a five-run deficit as La Verne took the game 6-4.

Walker Olis (Jr., Burlington, Wash.) once again led Pacific offensively, going 3 for 7 in the doubleheader with a double and five RBIs.  He is now hitting .455 for the series.  Ben Duerr (Jr., Lebanon, Ore.) and Wyatt Moore (Fr., Riverside, Calif.) also had three-hit afternoons for the Boxers.

The two teams will conclude their four-game series on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for noon.

GAME 1: LA VERNE 6, PACIFIC 4
While Pacific got on the board first, it was La Verne that built the momentum early in the game as they scored five of their six runs over the first five innings.  Duerr led off the game with a single to center field and scored on Olis' sacrifice fly.

The lead was short-lived as the Leopard scored two in the home half of second thanks to a two-run homer by Ben White.  La Verne added one in the third as Woody Reyes had a leadoff single and scored on a single by Nolan Henley.  Matt Caselli had the Leopard's run in the fourth as he was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Aaron Orona's single to left field.  White drove in La Verne's final two runs, singling up the middle to score Nick Byrd in the fifth and singling to left field to score Nick Michaels in the seventh.

After the first inning, La Verne starter Mark Jebbia was solid in shutting down the Pacific offense, limiting the Boxers to one hit over the next five innings.  Pacific, however, found some rhythm against the Leopards' bullpen for a three-run eighth inning rally.  Duerr was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored two batters later on Nathan Suyematsu's (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) single to right center field.  Suyematsu and Moore then both came home when a pickoff throw to put Moore out at third went wide.

Jebbia earned the win for La Verne to improve to 2-2 on the year. He allowed one unearned run on two hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of work.  Alex Bernstein earned the save.  Suyematsu fell to 2-2 with the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.  White led the Leopards by going 3 for 4 with the homer and two RBIs.  Five different players had Pacific's hits.

GAME 2: PACIFIC 10, LA VERNE 7
The second game started off much like the first, with Duerr leading off with a single and scored on Olis' sacrifice fly to right.  And much like the first game, the Leopards came back to score a pair in the third when Jebbia's double to left field scored Thomas and Henley.

That's where the similarities ended, however, as Pacific came to life with a four-run fourth inning.  Moore led off the inning with a single and scored when Josh Keithly (So., Mission Viejo, Calif.) tripled.  Keithly scored on the same play as the relay back to infield was mishandled by a La Verne infielder.  Two batters later, Cole Kanazawa (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) reached on an error and scored on Mike Thomson's (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) triple to center field.  Thompson then scored when Duerr singled to left.

La Verne rallied for two runs in the fifth when Zach Quinones singled to score Jebbia and Orona singled to left center to score Quinones.  The Boxers took both runs back in the top of the sixth when Olis' bases-loaded single to left scored Donnie Bradley (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) and Matt Hopp (Sr., Portland, Ore.).  White proceeded to tie the game with on swing of the bat in the home half of the sixth with a three-run homer to left center field, his second of the day.

Pacific took all three runs back for the win in the eighth.  Bradley was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, was sacrificed to second and scored on Olis' single.  JT Francies (Jr., Greeley, Colo.) followed with double down the right field line that scored Olis and Keithly added an infield single that scored Francies.

Cody Ahlgrimm (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) picked up his first collegiate win in relief, allowing two walks and striking out one while pitching the final 2.2 innings of the game.  Alex Bernstein took the loss for La Verne, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts in three innings of relief.  Duerr, Bradley, Olis, Moore, Keithly and Thomson each had two hits for Pacific, with Olis going 2 for 5 with four RBIs.  White went 2 for 5 with three RBIs to lead La Verne offensively.
