Errors Bite Boxers As Cavaliers Come Back For Win

Box Score

FOREST GROVE – A strong start fell part for Pacific in a fateful seventh inning Tuesday night as the Boxers ceded three runs to Concordia (Ore.) in the frame in a 6-5 loss to the Cavaliers in baseball action at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

The Boxers (9-16) led 5-2 after five innings, with the Cavaliers scoring a run in the top of the sixth to come within two.  Pacific then committed three errors in the seventh, allowing Concordia to score three runs without the benefit of a hit.

Donnie Bradley (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) led Pacific offensively, finishing 2 for 3 with a run and two RBIs.

Concordia (16-17) opened scoring in the first thanks to three one-out hits, including a Konnor Reddick single that score Nate Esposito.  The Boxers then proceeded to turn an error into a three-run home half of the first.  Ben Duerr (Jr., Lebanon, Ore.) led off with a single and Nathan Suyematsu (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) reached on an error.  Two batters later, Bradley singled to drive home Duerr while Tanner Mansell's (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) double to center scored Suyematsu and Bradley.

Elliott was hit by a pitch to lead off the Concordia second and scored on Adam Taylor's long single to left center field.  The Boxers took the run back in the third when Matt Hopp (Sr., Portland, Ore.) drew a leadoff walk and scored on Walker Olis' (Jr., Burlington, Wash.) single to left.  Hopp repeated the feat in the fifth with a leadoff double and scoring on Bradley's single to right.

After the first inning, Pacific starter Nate Montgomery (Jr., Sherwood, Ore.) settled in to retire 11 straight until giving up a leadoff single to Reddick in the top of the sixth.  He later scored on a bases loaded double play.  He left the game after the fifth having allowed three runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

The game turned Concordia's way in the sixth, scoring three runs without the benefit of a hit thanks to three Pacific errors.  Cole Crosby reached on an error to leadoff the frame, Taylor walked and Bartells reached on the second error, which brought home Crosby.  Cody McDonald then drew a bases loaded walk to score Taylor and Bartells scored when Trent Calmer reached on an error.  It proved to be all the runs that Concordia needed as the Cavaliers' reliever wiped out Pacific base runners in the eighth and ninth.

Mike Martinez earned his first win of the season in relief for Concordia, allowing two hits on a walk with four strikeouts in three innings.  Austin Hadley earned his fifth save of the season, allowing one walk and striking out two in the ninth.  Jonas Hanna (Fr., Portland, Ore.) took the loss for Pacific, allowing three unearned runs with two walks in the seventh.  Reddick's 2 for 3 performance led Concordia.

Pacific returns to Northwest Conference action on Friday as they begin a three-game series at Willamette.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
