Game 2 Box ScoreFOREST GROVE – It all came down to one inning for Whitworth Saturday as the Pirates used one big inning in both games to take both ends of a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader from Pacific at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

The Pirates scored three runs in the top of the first in the opener, which proved to be all they would need for a 3-1 victory.  Whitworth did not get their offense going until the top of the first, exploding for seven runs en route to an 8-2 win.

Ben Duerr (Jr., Lebanon, Ore.) led Pacific at the plate, finishing with three hits in the two games. In the process, he ran his current hitting streak to 12 games. Jeremy Druffel had a big game for Whitworth, finishing with six hits and three RBIs in the two games.

With the wins, Whitworth improved to 22-11, 13-7 NWC. Pacific dropped to 13-18, 8-12 NWC. The two teams conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon. Only the first of the two games will count in the NWC standings.

GAME 1: WHITWORTH 3, PACIFIC 1Whitworth did all of the damage they needed with a two-out rally in the top of the first. Joshua Davis singled with one out and advanced to third when JT Phelan doubled down the right field line with two outs.  Druffel followed with a double down the right field line, scoring both Davis and Phelan. Thomas Wakem capped the inning with a single to right field, scoring Druffel.

Pirates' starting pitcher Dan Schiebe allowed Pacific little chance to get their offense going, allowing just two hits in his six innings. The Boxers did not score until facing Carson Blumenthal in the ninth inning.Â
Donnie Bradley (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) stroked a one-out single down the left field line and scored on
Tanner Mansell's (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) two-out single to right center field.

Schiebe improved to 7-2 overall with the win for Whitworth, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out 11. Blumenthal earned his sixth save, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.Â
Kyle Treadway (Sr., Phoenix, Ore.) took the loss to fall to 4-5 on the season. He allowed three runs on nine hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Druffel went 3 for 4 with two RBIs to lead Whitworth offensively while Duerr went 2 for 4 to lead Pacific.

GAME 2: WHITWORTH 8, PACIFIC 2While Pacific pitcher
Paul Wolfram (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev.) kept Whitworth from capitalizing on threats in the second and third innings, the Boxers failed to capitalize on their own scoring opportunity in the first inning.

The Pirates broke the game open with a seven-run fourth inning. Whitworth's first two batters hit singles before Wakem opened scoring when his single up the middle scored Phelan. Nate Lamberty reached safely on a fielder's choice and Paul Miller followed with a two-run double to left center field. Lamberty scored on a ground out before Garrett Hughes mailed a two-run homer over the right field wall. Matthew Nelson and Phelan reached base before Druffel scored Nelson on his second hit of the inning. Nelson added one run for the Pirates in the sixth with his third homer of the year.

Pacific added singles runs in the seventh and the eighth. Bradley opened the seventh with a double to right center and scored on
Austin Gallagher's (Sr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) single to right center field.Â
Nathan Suyematsu (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) singled with one out in the eighth, advanced to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Walker Olis (Jr., Burlington, Wash.).

Spencer Ansett earned his fourth win of the season for Whitworth, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits with seven strikeouts in eight innings. Wolfram dropped to 1-2 with the loss for Pacific, allowing seven runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work. Druffel went 3 for 3 to lead Whitworth while Suyematsu went 2 for 3 to lead Pacific.
