Donnie Bradley (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) and
Matt Hopp (Sr., Portland, Ore.) turned in two of the top single game hitting performances of the season for Pacific Sunday as the duo led the Boxers to a doubleheader sweep of Whitworth in Northwest Conference baseball action at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.
Â
Bradley had four hits in the opener and had a pair doubles that started a pair of two-out, two-run rallies that led the Boxers to a 4-2 win in the opener. Hopp took over in the second game as he had four hits and what proved to be the game-winning single in the bottom of the eighth as the Boxers took the non-conference game by a 6-5 score.
Â
Tanner Mansell (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) joined Bradley and Hopp with a four-hit day, finishing with three hits in the opener and a pinch-hit single in the nightcap.
Â
With the wins, Pacific improved to 15-18, 9-12 NWC. Whitworth dropped to 22-13, 13-8 NWC. Pacific will travel to Corban for a non-conference game on Wednesday before going to Whitman for their final NWC series of the season on Saturday and Sunday.
Â
GAME 1: PACIFIC 4, WHITWORTH 2Bradley proved the catalyst for Pacific's opening game victory, going 4 for 4 with two runs and two doubles, both of which started Pacific's pair of two-run innings.Â
Â
The opener started as a pitcher's duel between Pacific's
Tyler Kotchik (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) and Whitworth's Cory Mack, with the two combining for four hits over the first three innings. Whitworth broke through with an unearned run in the third when Garrett Hughes singled and advanced to second on a throwing error. He then scored on Brett Moser's ground out.
Â
Pacific rebounded to take their first lead of the series in the fourth. Bradley started it with a two-out double down the right field line.Â
Tanner Mansell (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) followed with a single to right to score Bradley before
Austin Gallagher (Sr, Lake Oswego, Ore.) doubled to center field, scoring Mansell for the 2-1 lead.
Â
The Boxers added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning. Bradley again jump-started a two-out rally with a single up the middle and scored from first on Mansell's double to left field. Mansell later scored when
Josh Keithly (So., Mission Viejo, Calif.) reached safely on an error. The Pirates took one run back in the ninth on Matt Nelson's fourth home run of the year.
Â
Kotchik, making his first start of the season, improved to 2-1 on the season. He allowed one unearned run on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts.Â
Nathan Suyematsu (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) picked up his first save of the season, allowing one run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout in three innings of work. Mack took the loss for Whitworth, allowing three runs on eight hits with a walk and 12 strikeouts in 7.2 innings.Â
Â
In addition to Bradley's four hits, Mansell finished with three hits, two RBIs and two runs for the Boxers. Hughes led Whitworth by going 2 for 2 with a run.
Â
GAME 2: PACIFIC 6, WHITWORTH 5Unlike the first three games of the series, Pacific took command offensively to start in the second game with a five-run second inning. Gallagher drew a leadoff walk,
Kyle Treadway (Sr., Phoenix, Ore.) reached on an error and TJ Francis (Fr., Herriman, Utah) loaded the bases on his bunt single to the left side.Â
Â
Mike Thomson (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) pushed across the opening run when he was hit by a pitch and
Ben Duerr (Jr., Lebanon, Ore.) made it a 2-0 game when he drew a bases loaded walk. Francis scored the third run of the frame when he plated on a wild pitch before Hopp closed scoring with his two-RBI single to right center field.
Â
Whitworth did not get to Pacific starter
Colin McCusker (Sr., Olympia, Wash.) until the fourth when Hughes hit a two-out double and scored on a single by Dalton Carter. The Pirates then exploded for four runs in the sixth to tie it. Matt Nelson led off with a double, Jeremy Druffel reached on an error and Carson Blumenthal added a single that scored Nelson. Paul Miller followed with a single that scored Druffel before Thomas Wakem greeted Pacific reliever
Jon Inman (Fr., Canby, Ore.) with a two-RBI double to center field to tie the game.
Â
Pacific went down in order in both the sixth and seven innings before scoring the winning run in the ninth. Duerr started things when he reached on a fielder's choice. He advanced to second on a passed ball and then scored on Hopp's single through the right side.
Â
Nate Montgomery (Jr., Sherwood, Ore.) picked up his first win of the season for the Boxers in relief, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out two over the final two innings. JT Phelan dropped to 0-2 with the loss for Whitworth in relief, allowing one unearned run on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts in four innings. Hopp finished with four hits and three RBIs. Druffel, Miller and Hughes each had two hits for Whitworth.
