Box ScoreFOREST GROVE – Pacific made a strong showing with two victories in doubles against Whitman Saturday, but the momentum did not hold as the No. 23 ranked Missionaries rallied to take five singles matches and the 6-3 victory from the Boxers in Northwest Conference women's tennis action at the Holce Tennis Courts.
Â
"We played really well in doubles today and showed lots of improvement in our singles up and down the line," said Pacific assistant coach
Karen Wells. "The ladies fought hard to the very end, all the way to Kelly (Flores) falling in a second set tiebreaker. We are looking ahead to tomorrow and will try to finish the weekend strong."
Â
The Missionaries (12-5, 9-0 NWC) opened the doubles with a win as Jenna Gilbert and Alexandra Sigouin beat
Carlee Rhodaback (Jr., Albany, Ore.) and
Danielle Wicks (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) 8-0.Â
Kanani Kea (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii) and
Sidney Smith (Fr., Olympia, Wash.) evened it up with an 8-5 win over Seana Minuth and Lindsey Brodeck, 8-5, at No. 2. The No. 1 tandem of
Jelena Vidovic (Fr., Vancouver, Wash.) and
Mai Kobayashi (Fr., Waikoloa, Hawaii) gave Pacific the 2-1 lead when they took the No. 1 match, 8-5, over Courtney and Morgan Lawless.
Â
Sigouin opened the singles up by tying the match in the No. 3 flight as she downed Kobayashi 6-0, 6-1. Allie Wallin gave the Missionaries a 3-2 lead with her 6-2, 6-1 lead over Smith at No. 1, but Vidovic put Pacific back up with a solid 6-4, 6-4 win over Morgan Lawless in the No. 1 flight.
Â
Whitman closed it out, though, with a trio of wins in the lower half of the ladder. Hanna Greenberg gave the Missionaries the lead for good with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Rhodaback at No. 4. Katrina Allick was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Kea at No. 5 before Minuth closed the match with her win over
Kelly Flores (So., Ewa Beach, Hawaii), 6-0, 7-6 (8-6).
Â
With the loss, Pacific dropped to 5-9, 2-8 NWC. Pacific closes the weekend at home, hosting Willamette at 11 a.m.
