NEWBERG, Ore. – A pair of pitching duels did not go Pacific's way on Saturday as the Boxers fell 2-0 to George Fox in game one and 1-0 in game two at Morse Athletic Field.
Â
Rachel Roberts (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) inched closer to 150-career hits with a 1-3 showing in game two, while
Jessica Hotaling (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) struck out three in the second game of the twin bill.
Â
Pacific wraps up the regular season tomorrow with a doubleheader against the Bruins set to start at noon in Forest Grove at Sherman/Larkins Stadium. Pacific will honor its senior class of
Kiera Melton (Sr., Pleasanton, Calif.),
Kylee Oshiro (Sr., Aiea, Hawaii) and
Kaitlyn Shikada (Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii) between games Sunday afternoon.
Â
Game One: George Fox 2, Pacific 0Four Boxers recorded base hits in game one as the Boxers fell 2-0 to the Bruins.
Â
After both teams sent the minimum six batters each to the plate over the opening two innings, Shikada opened the third with a first-pitch bunt single. Pacific moved Shikada to second as Melton delivered a sacrifice bunt, but George Fox managed to erase the threat and escape the inning unscathed.
Â
The bottom of the third looked to go
Marissa Reichard's (Jr., Forest Grove, Ore.) way as she retired the first two batters of the inning. The Bruins delivered their first hit of the afternoon with two outs in the frame as Rebecca Pridmore tripled to the right-center gap. Reichard responded to Pridmore's triple by forcing a foul out to George Fox's Julia Apodaca to end the inning.
Â
The fourth did not see Pacific escape without harm as the Bruins tallied two runs in the inning.
Â
Neither team threatened again until the top of the seventh as Hotaling led off the frame with an infield single. A one-out single by Oshiro placed runners on first and second for Pacific before
Ashley Mitchell (Jr., Redmond, Wash.) singled through the right side to load the bases. A pair of strikeouts wrapped up the inning at the plate for Pacific as the Bruins wrapped up a 2-0 win in the opener.
Â
Game Two: George Fox 1, Pacific 0Roberts picked up career hit 145 as Pacific dropped a 1-0 decision in the second game of Saturday's double-dip.
Â
George Fox tallied the lone run of game two in the bottom of the third when Pridmore scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Kayla Anderson.
Â
The Boxers looked to respond in the top of the fourth when
Kylee Yamamoto (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii singled with one out and advanced to second on a passed ball. After Oshiro was hit by a pitch, the Boxers' base runners advanced on an illegal pitch, but a lineout wrapped up the offensive half of the inning for Pacific.
Â
The sixth looked to be Pacific's best chance to score when Roberts singled with one out and advanced to third as Hotaling reached on an error. Following a stolen base by Hotaling and a pop out, Oshiro appeared to have singled in Roberts, but the home plate umpire declared batter's interference and erased what would be the game tying run.
Â
The Bruins only sent three batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth before the George Fox defense held Pacific off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh.
