TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific women's lacrosse team finished the Northwest Conference schedule undefeated after topping Puget Sound 9-7 on Saturday on the back of a game winning goal from
Abby Talboy.
Â
The Boxers entered the scorebook less than a minute into the game when
Amy Mayhugh (Sr., Tigard, Ore.) scored on an assist from
Kara Smouse (Jr., Portland, Ore.).
Â
Mayhugh's first goal of the day was the only tally for either team over the opening ten minutes of play as the next goal was not scored until the 18:32 mark in the first period when Mayhugh added to her total on the day and put Pacific up 2-0.
Â
Five minutes after Mayhugh's second goal Pacific took advantage of a Puget Sound turnover and Mayhugh completed her hat trick to give the Boxers a 3-0 lead. The Boxer lead grew to 4-0 after a missed shot from the Loggers resulted in a goal from
April Lanz (So., Oregon City, Ore.) on the other end of the field off an assist from
Nicki Leeming (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.).
Â
Puget Sound joined Pacific on the scoreboard just inside the ten-minute mark when Maddie Soukup scored a free position goal.
Â
Mayhugh struck for the fourth time at 9:25 in the opening half to give Pacific a 5-1 lead over the home side before Puget Sound scored two-straight goals entering the final minute and a half of the first period.
Â
With 1:24 left in the half, Lanz scored off a Smouse assist, only to see Soukup score the final goal of the half to send the sides to the halftime break with Pacific up 6-4.
Â
The second period opened with a Puget Sound goal a little over nine minutes into the half by Ella Frazer. A tally from Soukup soon followed Frazer's goal to tie the game at 6-6 and less than a minute later a goal from Haley Schuster gave Puget Sound a one-goal advantage.
Â
The Puget Sound lead was short-lived as Mayhugh scored with 16:07 left in regulation on a free position opportunity to tie the game at 7-7. Mayhugh's fifth goal of the game was her 63rd of the season and gave her the school record for goals in a season, breaking Lilia Lee's 62-goal output in 2009.
Â
Talboy (Jr., Boise, Idaho) netted the would-be game-winning goal on a free position chance with 14:11 on the clock.
Â
Pacific struck for a ninth and final goal inside the final nine minutes of play when Lanz scored an unassisted tally with Pacific down a player.
Â
Mayhugh finished with five goals, while Lanz netted three and Talboy scored one. Smouse posted two assists for Pacific on the offensive end.
Â
Mayhugh grabbed five ground balls and saw teammate
Meg Chapman (So., Woodnville, Wash.) record eight draw controls in the victory.
Adrienne Salzwedel (So., Beaverton, Ore.) posted four saves in goal for Pacific.
Â
The Boxers host Southwestern on Sunday at 11 a.m., in what will be Pacific's Senior Day game. The Boxers will recognize the Mayhugh twins, Amy and Julie (Sr., Tigard, Ore.) before their game with the Pirates.
