Two Outs, Sohn What? Boxers Complete Sweep Of Whitman

Box Score

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Ryan Sohn (Jr., Ventura, Calif.) accounted for all of Pacific's scoring Sunday, leading Pacific to a 2-0 shutout of Whitman to sweep the Northwest Conference baseball series from the Missionaries at Borleske Stadium.

The Boxers needed only single runs from Sohn in the third and in the eighth, both with two outs, to backup a solid pitching performance by three Pacific pitchers.  The victory allowed the Boxers to improve to 19-18 overall and finish at 12-12 in NWC play in their first season under head coach Brian Billings.

In the third, Sohn reached on a walk behind a leadoff single by Danny Yazzolino (So., Portland, Ore.).  After moving to second on a failed double steal, Sohn advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a single to left center field by Matt Hopp (Sr., Portland, Ore.).

Sohn singled to left field to lead off the eighth inning and then advanced to second on a ground out.  Nathan Suyematsu (Jr., Tualatin, Ore.) followed with a single and a fielding error allowed Suyematsu to advance to second and Sohn to score.

The offensive efforts backed up another solid outing by the Pacific pitching staff.  Colin McCusker (Sr., Olympia, Wash.) earned his second win of the season in perhaps his best outing of the year, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out one in six innings.  Suyematsu proceeded to allow just two hits and a walk in 2.1 innings while Tyler Kotchik (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) retired the final two batters for his school record ninth save of the year.

Whitman's (6-27, 5-19 NWC) best scoring chance came in the second.  Paul Heywood hit a leadoff single and advanced to third on Joseph Zimmer's double to right field.  Nick Johnson followed and flied out before MacLean Harned hit into an inning-ending double play.  The Missionaries also had a runner on third base with one out in the seventh, but two infield ground outs kept a run from tallying.

Will Thompson fell to 3-3 with the loss for Whitman, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts in eight innings of work.  Seven different batters had the Boxers' hits while Zimmer and Jonny Chow had two hits apiece for the Missionaries.

Pacific will have next weekend off before finishing their 2015 campaign on May 2 and 3 as they host Willamette for a three-game non-conference series.
