Mad Hopps: Boxers Secure Split With Matt Hopp's Six Hits

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

FOREST GROVE – A six-hit day for Matt Hopp (Sr., Portland, Ore.), including a 4 for 5 performance in the nightcap, led Pacific to a split with Willamette Saturday in non-conference baseball action at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

After going 2 for 5 in a 16-4 loss in the opener, Hopp came alive to go 4 for 5 in the nightcap with two runs, two RBIs and a double to lead the Boxers to a 10-3 win.  Austin Gallagher (Sr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) finished with four hits, two in each game.

Tiras Koon led Willamette with six hits, going 4 for 4 in the second game.  With the split, Pacific improved to 20-19, assuring the Boxers no worse than a .500 overall finish under first year head coach Brian Billings.  Willamette dropped to 21-17.

The third game of the series, and the final game of the season for both teams, will take place on Sunday at noon.  Pacific will honor their six graduating seniors in a ceremony to begin at 11:45 a.m.

GAME 1: WILLAMETTE 16, PACIFIC 4
The Bearcats struck early, parlaying an error into two runs in the first.  Troy Conway was hit by a pitch to begin the game, moved to second a sacrifice bunt and scored when Mason Fessler reached on an error.  Gordie Clary added the second run with his single to left field that scored Tiras Koon.

Pacific starter Kyle Treadway (Sr., Phoenix, Ore.) settled down over the next four innings before the Bearcats' bats came alive for a seven-run sixth inning.  Jordan Ramp started the scoring with his one-out double down the right field line that scored Koon and Nate Bush followed with a single deep to right center field that scored Ramp and Clary.  Conway and Rolenn Himuro each added RBI singles before Hunter Gallant greeted reliever Nate Montgomery (Jr., Sherwood, Ore.) with a two-run single.

The Boxers rebounded to score their first two runs in the home half of the sixth.  Hopp started things with a single to center field, Dylan Wright (Fr., Gilbert, Ariz.) walked and both scored on a single up the middle by Austin Gallagher (Sr., Lake Oswego, Ore.).

Ramp made it a 10-2 Willamette lead in the seventh when he singled and then scored on Conway's single.  The Bearcats added two more runs in the eighth, with Gallant scoring a sacrifice fly and Eric Del Prado scoring on a single by Nate Bush.  Pacific took two runs back in the eighth.  Donnie Bradley (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) scored when Dallas Chung (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii) reached on an error and Gallagher scored on a single by Ben Duerr (Jr., Lebanon, Ore.).  Willamette would close scoring with four runs in the top of the ninth.

Peter Hoffman improved to 5-3 on the season with the win for Willamette, allowing two runs on four hits with five walks and nine strikeouts in six innings.  Treadway took the loss in his final start, allowing nine runs, even earned, on 10 hits with a strikeout in 5.1 innings.  Ramp led Willamette by going 4 for 5 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.  Hopp and Gallagher each had two hits for the Boxers.

GAME 2: PACIFIC 10, WILLAMETTE 3
At the start of the nightcap, it appeared that the Bearcats would repeat the script they wrote for the opener.  Ramp led off the game with an infield single, was sacrificed to second and scored on Koon's double down the right field line.  Koon later scored on a passed ball.

The Boxers, though, were not content to let that script play out.  Tanner Mansell (Jr., Lakeport, Calif.) drew a walk with two outs, stole second and scored on Gallagher's single to center field.  Pacific then took the lead with a three-run third.  Ryan Sohn (Jr., Ventura, Calif.) led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on Duerr's bunt single and scored when Hopp singled through the left field.  Duerr scored on Walker Olis' (Jr., Burlington, Wash.) sacrifice fly.  Hopp made it a 4-2 game when his single to right field scored Hopp.

Pacific added a run in the fifth when Hopp led off with a double to left and scored on a ground out.  Hopp then drove in the Boxers' lone run in the sixth, singling up the left side to score Sohn.

The Boxers then used a combination of power and a pair of errors to score four in the seventh, effectively putting the game away.  Bradley reached on a one-out single and advanced to second on an error.  Mansell followed with a triple to right center field, easily scoring Bradley.  Two batters later, Josh Keithly (So., Mission Viejo, Calif.) scored Mansell with a single to left center field.  Willamette reliever Jett Gallagher appeared to get the Bearcats out of the inning, but Duerr reached on a throwing error, allowing Keithly and Mike Thomson (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) before Duerr was put out trying reach third base.

Willamette picked up one run in the eighth as Austin Hagarty singled with one out and scored on Shea Harrison's sacrifice fly.

Paul Wolfram (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev.) picked up his second win of the season for the Boxers, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits with three walks and a strikeout in five innings of work.  Joey Angyus (Fr., Portland, Ore.) picked up his first save of the season, allowing one run on six hit with one strikeout over the final four innings.  Connor Loar took the loss for Willamette, allowing five runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts in five innings.

In addition to Hopp's four hits, Duerr, Bradley, Mansell and Gallagher each had two hits for the Boxers.  Koon went 4 for 4 to lead Willamette.
