SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - There's an old saying that reads "If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all."
Pacific University women's soccer coach
Morgan Joseph might be feeling that way after her Boxers fell in the second overtime (golden goal) to Chapman University 2-1 on Saturday morning at the SlugFest Tournament on the campus of UC Santa Cruz.
It was the second match in a row for the Boxers to suffer such a fate. On Sept. 3, they fell to Redlands at home in the second extra period, also 2-1. Pacific (0-3) dropped its opener to Warner Pacific 1-0 on an own goal.
Chapman's Jessica Loya scored the game winner just 25 seconds into the second extra period to give the Panthers their third consecutive win (3-1). Chapman also topped Whitworth in the SlugFest tournament yesterday, 2-1.
Chapman scored first in the 18th minute on the first goal of the match by Loya, but
Krisa Duff matched that score a little over ten minutes later when she stole a pass and popped a shot over the keepers head in the 29th minute.
Loya's winner came off a rebound clearance. She then flicked it past Pacific goalkeeper
Kailey Hifumi to end the match.
"We added another element to our performance today by creating more quality chances," Joseph assessed. "We need to put everything together and be more mentally tough in pressure situations in order to finish the game."
Joseph gave credit to Duff and
Kathleen McIntyre on offense and
Morgan McClincy on defense.
"Krisa and Kathleen provided different attacking threats for us today with quality performances and
Morgan McClincy had a near perfect game on both sides of the ball."
The Boxers had seven shots on goal to Chapman's four.
The Boxers will get another chance to bring it all together when they wrap play in the tournament on Sunday, taking on host UC Santa Cruz at noon.
