Boxers get comeback win in OT

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Senior McKenna Davidson capped a rousing Pacific comeback with a goal in the 96th minute, sending the Boxer women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Whitman on Saturday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

The Boxers scored in the 79th minute and just over five minutes into extra time to capture the Northwest Conference victory on the road. It was Pacific's first win during a season with a number of heartbreaking losses, moving them to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in league play. Whitman's record is identical at 1-5 and 1-1.

"We started sluggish in the first half and couldn't find our feet for any extended period," said head coach Morgan Joseph after the match. "The second half was a different story and we started to play with spirit and belief that we could get a result."

The Missionaries scored first in the 38th minute on a penalty kick by Danielle Wieck, and it looked like that might be all the hosts needed as time wound down in the second half.

But Krisa Duff scored her second goal of the season off a cross from Tia Kinilau, just six yards outside the net. Five minutes into overtime, McKenna scored her first goal of the season, heading the ball past the Whitman keeper.

"Krisa's tying goal jump started a fantastic finish to the game to earn the win," Joseph added. "I'm very proud of this comeback performance."

The Boxers will try and take that momentum into tomorrow's (Sunday) match in Spokane against Whitworth (noon).

"This was a great win to get, especially on the road," Joseph sighed. "Tia Kinilau was fantastic up top for us today, holding it up, bringing others into play, and creating chances.

"We had contributions from several newcomers today who really stepped up to the plate."
