SPOKANE, Wash. - Host Whitworth broke open a scoreless match with back-to-back goals early in the second half to sink Pacific in a women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
Danae Vandam and Jenna Morris scored at 56 and 58 minutes respectively to give the hosts all the offense that they would need as the Pirates moved to 4-3 on the season and to 2-1 in the Northwest Conference. Pacific fell to 1-6 overall and to 1-2 in the NWC.
Emily Thompson had two shots on goal for the Boxers that were denied. On the defensive end, goalie
Kililani Kunitomo was busy with a career-high 12 saves, many of them difficult.
"Kili had a fantastic performance in goal, was proactive off her line and holding on to tough saves," said Boxer head coach
Morgan Joseph. "
Brook Smith stepped into the center back role for the first time as a freshman and played with the poise of senior player."
Pacific returns home next Saturday (Sept. 26) for a conference match-up with Puget Sound at noon.
"These girls have faced a lot of adversity the past couple weeks and are finishing a tough stretch on the road," Joseph added. "I am proud of their effort today and never-die mentality. We have laid the foundation for future successes by embracing these opportunities to learn and improve.
We look forward to our next challenge this coming weekend."
