TACOMA, Wash. — Junior forward
Sarah Curl scored a career high 38 points, including 12 in overtime, to lead Pacific to a 78-70 upset win over Puget Sound on Friday night in Northwest Conference women's basketball action.
Curl's effort helped give the Boxers and first-year head coach
Jennifer Mountain its first conference win of the season (1-4) and they improved to 6-8 on the year. The Loggers dropped to 3-2 in NWC play and to 8-6 overall.
Curl came just two points shy of tying Chris Tarabochia's school record of 40 points (1985) and she did equal the Pacific mark of 16 field goals in a game, now shared with DeeDee Arnall (2004) and Amy Johnson (1993).
The Westview High School alum scored nearly half of her teams' points, and she also led the comeback bid that stunned the Memorial Fieldhouse crowd.
Trailing by four points with 24 seconds left, Curl scored in the paint with 16 tics left on the clock to pull within two points (62-60). After a make and then missed Logger free throw a few seconds later (63-60), Curl grabbed the rebound, pushed the ball up the court, and pulled up to drill a trey with seven seconds remaining. That sent the game into overtime, tied at 63-63.
Curl's heroics continued in the extra period. She scored just five seconds into overtime and then again 40 seconds later. Pacific would never trail in overtime and Curl would deposit 12 of Pacific's points as they outscored the home team 15-7 in bonus time.
In regulation, Pacific trailed the entire fourth quarter and were down eight points with 5:55 left. They also were behind at the halftime break 32-28 and were on the short end by as many as eight points in the second quarter. The Loggers led for most of the contest, subtracting the first period would the visitors had a five point lead (14-9) and led at the end of the first ten minutes, 16-14.
Curl, whose previous career high was 27 points, hit 16 of her 28 shots, including four of six three-point attempts. She also had seven rebounds.
Karli McHone added 16 points and seven boards. Freshman
Charli Elliott had a career best 13 rebounds and
Kyla Siri had a season high seven assists. As a team, the Boxers nailed 11 of 26 trey attempts and had 14 steals in the game.
Emily Sheldon, who came into the contest as the leading scorer in the NWC at 20.4 points a game, led the Loggers with 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Samone Jackson added 19 for UPS.
The Boxers will continue their Tacoma road swing with a contest at Pacific Lutheran on Saturday. Start time is 4 p.m.
