TACOMA, Wash. — One night after watching teammate
Sarah Curl score 38 points to lead her team over Puget Sound,
Karli McHone took the lead on Saturday, potting 29 points during a 62-53 victory over Pacific Lutheran at Olson Gymnasium.
The win gave the Boxers a sweep in Tacoma and their first two wins in Northwest Conference play (2-4). They improved to 7-8 overall. Host Pacific Lutheran fell to 2-4 in NWC action and to 6-9 on the year.
McHone, a 5-4 junior guard, missed only two shots all night from the field. She nailed seven of her nine attempts from the field, including six of seven from behind the arch. She also converted 9 of 12 free throw attempts. She had 17 of her points in the first half.
In addition to McHone's scoring outburst, it was Pacific's defense in the fourth quarter that played a big role in the victory.
After a tight first three quarters, that saw neither team lead by more than five points with ten lead changes, the Boxers clamped down in the final ten minutes. With Pacific up 50-45 heading into the final quarter of play, the Boxers kept the Lutes off the scoreboard for nearly seven minutes--from 9:00 to 2:05. By then the Boxers had built a ten point lead (57-47) and PLU couldn't recover.
McHone was the only Boxer in double figures, but Curl added eight points and ten rebounds while
Kyla Siri had nearly identical numbers with seven counters and ten boards.
Nikki Gilbert added nine points.
The Boxers hit nine of 17 three points attempts. Samantha Helleigh led PLU with 10 points.
Pacific will return home next weekend to host Lewis & Clark and Linfield on Friday and Saturday at the Stoller Center.
