Whitman rallied from a two-set deficit to end the four-match winning streak for the Pacific University volleyball team on Saturday night in Forest Grove. The Pirates outlasted the Boxers, 18-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-15, 19-17 in the win.
The Boxers (11-9, 5-5 NWC) built a two-set lead against the top team in the Northwest Conference. Freshman
Karlee Duncan (Bend, Ore.) and senior
Tiare Kaopua (Nanakuli, Hawai'i) each had 15 kills, plus senior
Jamie Steach (Pasco, Wash.) had her seventh double double of the season with 39 assists and 16 digs and senior
Lia Zablan had 27 digs in the loss.

The Pirates (15-5, 9-1 NWC) also utilized a balanced offensive attack in the win. Brenna Bruil paced an attack that hit .209 with a team-high 13 kills and a .289 hitting percentage. Emiko Kahler and Lauren Budde each added 12 kills, Erin White also had a double double with 44 assists and 10 digs to go along with eight kills for a near triple double.

Pacific won the first set on the strength of three kills each from Duncan and Kaopua en route to a .139 hitting percentage and a 25-18 win. The second set saw the Boxers rally back from an early 9-2 deficit to rally to take a 14-13 lead on a
Morgan Mendicino kill. The two teams went back and forth with the score being tied on six occasions until Pacific took advantage of a service and an attack error to take the second set, 25-20. Duncan added four more kills to pace the Boxers.

Following the intermission, the two teams went back and forth until a five-point spurt by the Pirates put the visitors ahead and for the remainder of the set. Whitworth out hit Pacific, .293 to .179. Cassandra Mendoza and Emiko Kahler each had four kills and Kaopua had five for the Boxers. Â The hot-hitting Pirates won the fourth set after hitting .281 to .059 for the Boxers. Three-different Whitworth players had three kills to send the match to a decisive fifth set.

Pacific, who was playing in its third-straight five-set match, built an early lead. The two teams combined to withstand three-match points until a ball handling error by Boxers and a kill by White ended the match to complete the comeback for the visitors.
Next, Pacific will travel to face Puget Sound on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. Earlier this season, the Boxers lost in three to the Loggers in Forest Grove on Sept. 23.
