FOREST GROVE, Ore. — An early goal in traffic for Willamette was all the scoring to be seen at Hanson Stadium on Sunday afternoon as the Bearcats topped the Boxers 1-0 in the rain.
Willamette pushed the attack after the opening whistle, drawing an early offside call before Pacific turned the other direction and earned a corner kick in the sixth minute. The corner from senior
Lucy Almao (Orange County, Calif.) turned into a shot from sophomore
Adina Goodwin (Tualatin, Ore.), but Goodwin's strike was turned away by Willamette goalkeeper Kristen Barclay.
Nearly three minutes later, the Bearcats picked up the lone goal of the match as Emmy Manset scored in the ninth minute on a shot to the near post inside the 18-yard box.
Neither team was able to test the others keeper for much of the first period after Manset's goal, as 10 of the 14 shots in the period were wide of the goal frame.
The seond period opened with Pacific's sophomore keeper
Kailey Hifumi (Mililani, Hawaii) forced to make her first save of the period.
The two squads combined for eight shots in thes econd period, but were unable to find the back of the net as time expired on a 1-0 Willamette victory.
Hifumi finished with three saves in the match, while sophomore
Emily Thompson (Orange County, Calif.) recorded a team-high three shots in the match.
The Boxers hit the road on Saturday for a conference tilt at Lewis & Clark, scheduled for a noon kickoff.
