Stalemate in Walla Walla for Pacific soccer

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Pacific men's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against Whitman on Sunday at the Whitman Athletic Fields as junior Leyton Thommasen recorded five saves in goal.

In a defensive battle, the Boxers were able to hold off Whitman throughout the opening 45 minutes of play. Whitman forced Thommasen (Des Moines, Wash.) to make a pair of saves in the opening period, as Jimmy Jacobson placed a shot on frame in the 19th minute and Ben Freedman followed with a shot on goal in the 24th.

Whitman forced Thommasen into two more saves in the second half, while Pacific junior Matt Kimball (Tigard, Ore.) saw his shot parried away by Whitman goalkeeper Jack Filipponi in the 81st minute.

The remaining nine minutes of regulation and the first ten minutes of extra time saw neither team place another shot on frame.

The next scoring opportunity for either team came in the 104th minute when freshman Robert Nurmi (Gig Harbor, Wash.) saw Filipponi turn his attempt on frame away.

Junior Diego Lopes (San Francisco, Calif.) forced Filipponi into a save in the 107th minute of action, before Thommasen stopped the final look at goal in the 110th minute.

The Boxers continue on the road this coming Saturday (10/8) with a 2:30 p.m. kickoff at George Fox.
