Norton's penalty conversion earns Boxers 1-0 win

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — A penalty kick goal in the 33rd minute proved to be all the scoring on the day at Hanson Stadium as the Pacific men's soccer team topped Willamette 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Pacific sophomore Keola Norton (Kahalu'u, Hawaii) netted his second goal of the season in the 33rd minute of play between the Boxers and Bearcats.

Willamette opened the match with a high headed shot in the second mnute, with Pacific seeing their first scoring opportunity int he 16th minute as junior Matt Kimball (Tigard, Ore.) sent a volley wide of the goal.

In the 33rd minute, the Boxers looked to have fired two shots toward goal, but in the process Norton was dragged down by a Bearcats defender. Norton hopped up to the penalty spot and scored as the Willamette goalkeeper guessed wrong and dove the opposite way of Norton's hard low shot.

Thw two sides placed one shot each on frame in the final minutes of the opening half, but Josh Fuentes and Pacific junior Leyton Thommasen (Des Moines, Wash.) both recorded saves.

The second period saw both teams push toward goal, with Kimball seeing the first strong scoring opportunity in the 66th minute. Kimball found himself on the end of a cross, but was unable to make up the angle on goal and tucked his header into the outside netting of the frame.

Late in regulation, Willamette sent all ten field players toward the Pacific goal and saw Austin Arnold's header in the 88th minute cleared off the line by the head of a Pacific defender and off the cross bar. Thommasen dove to collect the ball off the cross bar and kept the Boxers from danger before time expired on the match.

Pacific heads north next weekend for a two-day stay in Tacoma, starting with a Saturday match at Pacific Lutheran. The Boxers and Lutes are scheduled to kickoff at 2:30 p.m.
