Double digit duo leads Boxers to win over Knights

FOREST GROVE — Double digit performances by Sarah Curl and Karli McHone helped push Pacific to a 73-63 victory over Warner Pacific inside of the Stoller Center on Saturday afternoon.

Curl (Portland, Ore.) led Pacific with 28 points and picked up a double-double with 12 rebounds, while McHone (Glenns Ferry, Idaho) finished with 19 points on the day.

The opening quarter of the game saw Pacific shoot out to an 8-4 lead following a 3-pointer by Curl off an assist from Nikki Gilbert (East Wenatchee, Wash.). The 3-point make by Curl sparked a run for the visitors as the Knights rattled off six-straight points to take a 10-8 lead with 6:25 left in the period. After a nearly four minute scoring drought for both teams, the Knights extended their lead to five with 2:56 on the clock. McHone answered with a 3-pointer via Gilbert's assist and cut the deficit to two. A late run by Warner Pacific left the Boxers trailing 18-15 at the first break.

Gilbert hit a 3-pointer of her own out of the quarter break, sparking four-straight 3-point makes fom Pacific. The Boxers' 3-point party saw Gilbert joined by McHone, Erica Pagan (Kailua, Hawaii) and Curl. The Boxers' run left them up 27-21 with 7:21 remaining in the first half. Back-to-back Warner Pacific lay-ups pulled the Knights within two, but the Boxers kept Warner Pacific at arms length thanks to Curl, Merrily Jones (Milwaukie, Ore.) and McHone scoring in a span of two-minutes. Pacifc's lead reached seven at the 2:44 mark when Jordan Oster (Santa Clariata, Calif.) tallied a 3-pointer, giving the Boxers a 37-30 lead in the final three minutes of the half. Warner Pacific continued to scrap, pulling within one in the final 11 seconds, before McHone ended the half with a 3-pointer and send Pacific to the locker room with a 40-36 lead.

A seesaw battle ensued out of intermission, with Warner Pacific taking control at the 5:32 mark when Darbi Pink hit a 3-pointer and put the Knights up by seven. Curl made sure the seven-point deficit was short lived as she collected a pass from Lauren Lykins (Hillsboro, Ore.) and answered back with a 3-pointer. The two-sides traded baskets over the final five minutes of the third quater, with the score evening out on two occasions before the Knights left the period with a one-point advantage at 55-54.

The fourth quarter was dominated by the Boxers, starting with a jumper by Kaela Collins (Snohomish, Wash.) and a pair of made free throws by Leah Bassik (Anthem, Ariz.) Holding a three-point lead with just under eight minutes remaining in regulation, Pacific surrendered a free throw to the Knights and answered with a pair of makes from the charity stripe by Curl. McHone struck twice from the line and gave Pacific a six point lead at the five-minute mark. Pacific's lead grew to 12 with 1:23 remaining, when McHone assisted on a Curl 3-pointer. The Knigths recovered to pull within eight in the final minute, a pair of free throws from Curl put a bow on a 10-point Boxer victory.

Curl's stat line not only featured 28 points and 12 rebounds, but five assists, three steals and a blocked shot on the day. McHone added four rebounds and three assists, while hitting five 3-pointers against the Knights. Gilbert finished with four assists, while Bassik snagged six rebounds.

The Boxers return home on Monday with a scheduled home tip-off of 7 p.m. against the Corban Warriors.
