A 51-yard touchdown pass from Grant Schroeder to Trevor Daniels with 9:46 left to play led host George Fox to a 15-12 win over Pacific on Saturday in Newberg.
The Bruins (4-4, 4-2 NWC), early in the fourth quarter, set up the touchdown when Schroeder completed back-to-back passes to James Nguyen and Brad Lander. Then, on second down, he found Daniels, who had got a few steps ahead of the Pacific defense for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown.
The Boxers (3-6, 2-4 NWC) went ahead for the third time in the contest on the first play of the fourth quarter when quarterback
Campbell Summerfield found wide receiver
Kobe Williams for a 73-yard touchdown pass. The touchdown pass put Pacific ahead 12-7 with 14:40 left to play in the contest.
The two teams traded punts before what proved to be the game-winning touchdown. However, the Boxers mounted a late threat that was thwarted when Summerfield was intercepted at the seven-yard line and a final effort in the final two minutes ended with four-straight incompletions.
Earlier in the game, Pacific scored a pair of field goals by junior
Alex Beekman on its first two drives for an early 6-0 lead. It is the third time in the career for Beekman to make a pair of field goals in a contest.
To start the game, the Boxers'
Kyle Rademacher forced a fumble on the opening kickoff that was recovered by
Brett Voth to set up the first scoring drive of the day. On its second drive of the game, Pacific got as close as the Bruins' four-yard line before settling for a Beekman field goal and a 6-0 lead.
The Bruins took their first lead of the day when they took advantage of a missed field goal by the Boxers. Eight plays later, Schroeder ran it in from 19 yards out on a 3
rd and 7 play. Earlier in the drive, Schroeder completed a 36-yard pass play to Lander on a third down play.
In the loss, Pacific picked up 314 yards of total offense with 254 of it coming through the air by Summerfield. Williams caught seven passes for 133 yards for his fifth 100-yard receiving game of the season to lead the Boxers.
For the Bruins, Schroeder completed 17 of 30 passes for 295 yards through the air. Like the Boxers, George Fox struggled to build a ground game with 41 rushes for 107 yards.
Next, the Boxers will end the season when they host the Loggers of Puget Sound at Hanson Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m.
