GEORGETOWN, Texas — No. 3 nationally ranked Emory pounded out 14 hits and used a strong pitching performance from one of the top hurlers in the region to take down Pacific 8-4 in the Central Texas Tournament at Rockwell Field.
Emory, who defeated George Fox earlier in the day 8-0, improved to 2-0 on the season. The Boxers dropped to 3-2.
Emory, from Georgia, finished fifth in the NCAA Division III tournament last spring and were national runner-ups in 2014.
Sophomore Hans Hanson pitched six innings of shutout ball, allowing only three hits to keep the Boxers off the scoreboard early. Hanson, the South Region Rookie of the Year in 2015, walked only one batter and struck out three.
Meanwhile, the Eagles roughed up Boxer starter
Eric Purcell for eight hits and five runs through the first four and a third innings of play. They would go on to touch five different Pacific pitchers for 14 hits, two of them doubles.
Paciific didn't register a hit until the bottom of the fourth when
Walker Olis singled and then stole second base. He was stranded, but the Boxers scored in the seventh inning when
Kurtis Kloke led off the stanza with a double and later scored on an error. Pacific also threatened in the sixth after Hanson left the game, when
Kane Ulrich and
Nathan Suyematsu singled and Olis walked, but a fly out ended the inning.
In the ninth, Pacific used four walks, a hit batter, a
Tanner Mansell sacrifice fly and a
Joey Galeno infield single to put three more runs on the board. But the Boxers left three runners on base when a strikeout ended the game.
No one had more than one hit for Pacific, although Olis reached base three times with a hit and two walks.
The Boxers will continue play in the Central Texas Tournament on Saturday, taking on No. 7 ranked Rhodes in the morning and Southwestern in the afternoon.
