Late Lute burst gives PLU comeback win, 69-65

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Pacific Lutheran's Ionna Price hit a three-pointer and scored via a conventional three-point play in the final two minutes of play to help give the visiting Lutes a 69-65 comeback victory over Pacific in women's basketball action on Friday night at the Stoller Center.

The win was the second in a row for PLU, who improved to 8-14 on the season and to 4-9 in the Northwest Conference. The Boxers dropped to 10-12 on the year and to 5-8 in the NWC.

The host Boxers led 51-44 heading into the fourth quarter and pushed that lead to 53-44 in the opening moments of the fourth. A Sarah Curl three-pointer with 7:25 left put Pacific up by ten points (56-46). After a Curl free throw it was still a nine-point margin with just a little over six minutes to play.

But that's when the Lutes started their run. They would outscore the Boxers 11-2 over the next three minutes, tying the game at 60-60 on a Megan Abdo basket with 2:45 left. After a Curl trey made it 63-60 moments later, Price went into her game winning mode.

First, she muscled her way to a basket and free throw at 2:11, and then drilled a trey from the top of the key with a minute and a half left to give the Lutes a 66-63 lead. A Charlie Elliott jumper pulled Pacific to within one point but Abdo answered with a drive and basket in the middle of the key with 34 seconds left to make it a 68-65 lead. Pacific then had three misses at the other end and a Lute free throw accounted for the final margin.

Curl led all scorers with 23 points and she also had seven rebounds. Jillian Ross added 15 for the Boxers, hitting 3-of-6 trey attempts. Kyla Siri was close to a double-double with nine points and seven boards.

Price led PLU with 18 points and Abdo had 16.

The Boxers return to action tomorrow night for their final home game of the season, hosting Puget Sound at 4 p.m. It will be senior night, and Pacific will honor Siri and Abby Talboy prior to the game.
