Torrid second quarter pushes Loggers past Boxers

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Puget Sound nailed 12 of 15 second quarter shots to overcome a first quarter deficit and defeat Pacific on Saturday night in a women's basketball game at the Stoller Center.

Puget Sound won its third game in a row to improve to 16-7 on the season and to 11-3 in the Northwest Conference. Pacific dropped to 10-13 on the year and to 5-9 in the NWC. With the win, the Loggers gained a measure of revenge. UPS has only three losses in conference play, but one of them was a 78-70 overtime setback to Pacific back in January in Tacoma.

Pacific jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter as the Loggers couldn't find the range. After a Jillian Ross three-pointer, the Boxers led 13-7. Pacific would take a slight 13-11 margin into the second quarter as UPS had only two field goals in the first ten minutes.

But the Loggers went on a 10-0 run, taking the lead on a Emily Sheldon basket, and they would never trail again. They would score 26 second quarter points, hitting 12 of 15 shots and take a 37-27 into the halftime locker room. Sheldon had 15 points at intermission.

UPS would increase its lead to 21 points at the end of the third quarter (56-37). Pacific would twice cut the Logger margin to 12 points in the fourth quarter but they would get no closer than that.

Sarah Curl led the Boxers with 21 points. Karli McHone was also in double figures with 13 and Kyla Siri had 10 and seven rebounds. Sheldon led all scorers with 25 points and she had seven rebounds. Samone Jackson added 16 points and Alexis Noren had 11 assists. The Loggers converted 17 of 19 free throw attempts and had only seven turnovers in the game.

Pacific will cap its season next weekend on the road, taking on Linfield on Friday and Lewis & Clark on Saturday.
