Bruin bats come alive in Boxer sweep

NEWBERG, Ore. — The George Fox Bruins bashed 29 hits and scored 20 times in cruising to a doubleheader sweep of Pacific in the Northwest Conference baseball openers for both teams at the Curtis and Margaret Morse Athletic Complex on Saturday.

With the 11-3 and 9-2 victories, George Fox improved to 6-4 on the season and opened at 2-0 in conference play. Pacific falls to 4-6 overall and to 0-2 in the NWC. The two squads will play a single game on Sunday to wrap up the series in Newberg.

In the first game, the Bruins scored in every inning except the first two to methodically pound out the win. They laced out 16 hits in the game, including eight for extra bases. A.J. Valencia had a double, a triple and three RBI from the lead-off spot and Andrew Reichenbach had a three-bagger and a home run to pace the home team.

Meanwhile, GFU pitcher Dustin Wells was shutting down the Boxers on the other side of the scorebook. He went eight innings, allowing only one run, four hits, one walk and eight strikeouts. The senior left-hander improved to 2-1 with the win.

The only trouble he had to work out of was in the Boxer sixth inning, when Ben Duerr and Tanner Mansell traded places with doubles to account for the only Pacific run. Joey Galeno was the only Pacific hitter with more than one base knock, and his single in the ninth inning after Wells had left drove in a pair of runs. On defense, the Boxers committed four errors in the field.

In the second game, the Bruins used a five-run third inning to do most of the damage. Gabe Louthan hit a two-run homer in that stanza and Reichenbach had an RBI double in the fourth inning to put distance between the home team and the visitors early.

George Fox led 8-0 before Pacific got on the board with two unearned runs in the eighth inning. Mansell had an RBI single to account for one of those plate crossings.

This time it was Alex Jondal and Zachary Muenster on the hill for the Bruins to keep the Boxer bats silent. Jondal went the first six innings, giving up six hits and no runs and Muenster finished with three innings of relief, allowing just two hits and no earned runs. Neither Bruin pitcher allowed an extra base hit.

Nathan Suyematsu had two of Pacific's eight hits in the game, and was the only Boxer to have more than one safety in the second game.

Both Boxer starting pitchers on this day got roughed up, with Paul Wolfram taking the loss in game one and Sam Lawrence suffering the same fate in the nightcap.

Start time for Sunday's contest is noon.
