Walk-off homer gives Bruins win and sweep

NEWBERG, Ore. — Kadyn Nannini hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give host George Fox Bruins an 8-6 win over Pacific in a wild and crazy game at the Curtis and Margaret Morse Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The victory gave the Bruins the three-game sweep over the Boxers, after GFU claimed yesterday's doubleheader by 9-2 and 11-3 counts. George Fox is now 7-4 on the season and are off to a 3-0 start in the Northwest Conference. Pacific is now 4-7 overall and 0-3 in league play.

In the top half of the ninth inning, the Boxers trailed 6-5 until Kurtis Kloke led off the inning with a solo home run to tie the game at 6-6. Shane Suyama then singled to put the go-ahead runner on base. Suyama ended up being stranded, setting up the fateful bottom half of the inning.

Clay Mott singled to begin the inning, and a sacrifice bunt moved him to second as the Bruins looked to use small ball to get Mott home with the winning run. But Nannini ended that strategy with a long ball, his first hit of the game.

The Boxers had 10 hits in the game, three by Kloke and two by Suyama. Kloke also had a double in addition to his home run and had three RBI. Suyama drove in two runs, as both players had key blows in Pacific's three-run seventh inning. Pacific played from behind the whole game until they tied the game in the seventh (5-5).

George Fox had 12 hits in the game including three each by Mott and A.J. Valencia. Sam Morland pitched two innings in relief to get the win in a game that was played off and on in the rain and had at least one rain delay.

The Boxers are scheduled to play their home openers next weekend, hosting No. 17/16 nationally ranked Pacific Lutheran. Saturday's doubleheader start time is noon.
