TACOMA, Wash. — Pacific won two of the three doubles matches but Pacific Lutheran responded by winning four of the six singles contests to edge the Boxers 5-4 in a women's tennis match at the Sprinker Tennis Center.

It was the Northwest Conference opener for both teams. PLU is now 1-1 overall, while Pacific is 0-1.

The Boxers went up 2-1 on the scoreboard after wins at numbers one and two doubles. Kaitlyn Lomartire and Danielle du Plooy won 8-4 and No. 1 and Mai Kobayashi and Chantelle Baclay triumphed at No. 2, 8-3.

du Plooy also won at No. 2 singles in a battle with Samantha Lund, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, and Baclay was impressive at court three with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

But the Lutes won in straight sets at four and five singles, and then captured two three-set battles at one and six. Caroline Dreber topped Lomartire at No. 1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 and Carlee Rhodaback fell to Lilly Le on court six, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.

"It was an impressive effort in our first match," said Boxer assistant coach Karen Wells. "We showed a lot of heart and will come back tomorrow ready to go."

Pacific returns to the courts tomorrow (Sunday) in McMinnville when they take on Linfield. Start time is at 1 p.m.
