Softball Boxers split with Warriors

HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. — Host Corban grabbed the opener 4-1 but the Boxers bounced back to win the nightcap 10-6 to gain a softball doubleheader split on Sunday at Hood View Park.

Pacific improved to 7-2-1 on the season with the non-conference result. Corban is now 6-4. The game was played on turf in Happy Valley because Corban's field was too wet.

The Boxers scored four runs in the third inning and five more in the fifth to give them all the runs that they would need in the second game. Ashley Mitchell also added her third home run of the season in the second inning, a solo shot. In the third stanza, Quirena Natividad had a two-run single, Emily Tesdale had a double and Mitchell had an RBI-base hit.

Tesdale drove in another two runs with a single in the fourth as Pacific picked up five runs on just three hits.

Corban led off the last of the seventh with a solo shot by Iris Rodriguez, but Cassie Apple got the next three outs to end the game.

Tesdale had four hits in four trips to the plate, including two doubles and two RBI. Mitchell had three hits and three RBI in the game and Natividad knocked in a trio of runs as well.

The first game was much different as the Warriors rode the arm of Jessica Holsinger to the 4-1 win. Holsinger pitched six innings and gave up just three hits, one earned run and had five strikeouts to improve to 2-2.

Pacific picked up its only run in the second inning when Mitchell dropped down a bunt single, moved to second on Kylee Yamamoto's sacrifice and later scored on Tesdale's RBI single. The only other major threat Pacific made was in the seventh when Yamamoto and Megan Winans singled to put Boxers on first and second base with no outs. But a line drive double play and a ground out ended the threat and the game.

Winans was the only Boxer with two hits, and the top three in the Pacific order were a rare combined 0-for-8. Raimee Sluder had three hits for the Warriors as Boxer pitcher Marissa Reichard took her first loss of the season (4-1). Alyssa Burns pitched 2.2 strong innings of relief, giving up three hits and no runs.

Next scheduled action for the Boxers is Tuesday, when they host Concordia in 4 p.m. doubleheader. Pacific will open Northwest Conference action this Saturday and Sunday when they host Pacific Lutheran in a four-game series. Start time both days is noon.
