Boxers squeeze out win over UPS

Results

TACOMA, Wash. — Rallying back from a doubles deficit, the Pacific women's tennis team won four of six singles matches to edge Puget Sound on Saturday afternoon at the UPS Tennis Pavilion, 5-4.

It was Pacific's first team win of the season, moving them to 1-2 overall and in the Northwest Conference. The Loggers dropped to 0-4 overall and to 0-2 in the NWC.

The Boxers fell in two of the three doubles matches, including a heartbreaker at No. 1. There, Kaitlyn Lomartire and Chantelle Baclay fell to Elizabeth Chao and Nichole Bouche in a tie-breaker, 8-7 (8-6). The Boxers also lost at No. 2 doubles and but kept in the match with an 8-2 win at No. 3, courtesy of Marissa Hayashi and Mai Kobayashi.

The tables then turned for the visitors in the singles matches. Lomartire won easily on court one (6-3, 6-1), Baclay did the same at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2) and ditto for Kanani Kea at No. 3 by the count of 6-2, 6-2. Kobayashi swept her opponent at No. 6 (6-0, 6-0), while Carlee Rhodaback dropped a tight match at No. 5, 6-3, 6-4.

With the match already in hand, Hayashi and Tresa Bild hooked up in the longest match of the day with the Logger prevailing, 6-2, 2-6, 10-6.

The Boxers played the match without their No. 2 player, Danielle du Plooy (injury).

It was a gritty win today," said Boxer head coach Brian Jackson. "Not having one of our top players (du Plooy), we had to put some new teams out in doubles, and it showed. Going down 2-1 after doubles put a lot of pressure on the ladies, but they eventually caught their stride and pulled through. Really proud of the effort. Short-handed, not our best tennis, but were able to pull the win."

The Boxers will return to the courts next weekend, hosting Linfield on Saturday and traveling to Willamette on Sunday. Both matches will start at 1 p.m.
