Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Bruins edge Boxers on two late goals

NEWBERG, Ore. — George Fox scored a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the game to clip Pacific in a back and forth women's lacrosse match on Saturday afternoon at the Austin Sports Complex, 13-12.

The heart breaking defeat is Pacific's first of the year (4-1), and it gives the Bruins an early edge in the Northwest Conference standings. GFU's win over the defending conference champs moves them to 2-1 on the season and to 2-0 in the NWC. The Boxers are now 1-1 in league play.

Alexa Nakashimada scored her fifth goal of the day and her tenth of the season with 51 seconds left to break a 12-12 tie and provide the game winner for the hosts. One minute earlier, Jess Hanson dropped a shot in the net from the left wing to tie the game (12-12).

The Boxer had what they hoped was the match clincher with 6:07 remaining when Jordyn Godfrey scored from inside the circle off a pass from Kara Smouse, but the Boxers didn't find the goal for the rest of the match.

It was a match that was about as even as it could be, minus the final score. George Fox had 21 shots on goal to Pacific's 19, and the Bruins had a 28-27 edge in shots. There were 11 ties and nine lead changes.

The Boxers took the early margin and had the largest lead of the game at 3-1 four minutes into the contest. April Lanz, who would have five goals in the game, scored 32 seconds into the match and would tally four scores in the first half as the two teams went into the locker room knotted at 8-8 at the break.

The lead changes continued in the second half, all the way to Nakashimada's game winner.

Lanz's five scores were a season high for the Boxers. Paisley Hiefield added two scores and four draw controls, while Meg Chapman had two goals as well. Goalkeeper Adrienne Salzwedel had eight saves.

In addition to Nakashimada's five goals, Hanson and Sydney Goo had three scores each for the Bruins.

Pacific will have less than 24 hours to recover, traveling to Tacoma on Sunday to take on Puget Sound. Start time is noon.
