Kaitlyn Lomartire had her hand in two upsets on the day but conference leader Lewis & Clark remained unbeaten with a 7-2 team win on Sunday afternoon at the Holce Tennis Complex.
The Pioneers, ranked sixth in the west region and 20th in the latest NCAA Division III rankings, improved to 9-0 on the season and in Northwest Conference play as well. The Boxer are now 3-4 overall and also 3-4 in NWC matches.
But Lomartire teamed with
Chantelle Baclay to do something no one else had done this year against the Pioneers. They defeated the doubles tandem of Summer and Aurora Garrison, 8-5. The Garrison sisters were 6-0 coming into the match and were ranked sixth in the region and No. 23 nationally. Lomartire and Baclay are now 3-1 on the year playing together in doubles.
Lomartire then knocked off Aurora Garrison in singles play, 6-3, 6-1. Aurora Garrison, who normally plays at the No. 2 spot with her sister Summer playing at No. 1, is ranked No. 12 in the region and 47th nationally.
"It was a solid day for Kaitlyn," said Boxer assistant coach
Karen Wells. "She is getting her legs under her after missing the summer and fall recovering from injury."
The rest of the day belonged to the Pioneers, although Baclay gave early chase to another upset win at the No. 2 singles slot. She took the first set off of Christine Eliazo in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-5), but then Eliazo took over and won the next two sets at love.
The Boxers will step outside of conference play for the first time this year on Wednesday (March 16) when they host Southwestern (Tex). Start time at the Holce Tennis Complex will be 4 p.m.
