ResultsSPOKANE, Wash. — Whitworth won the two tightest singles battles and the two closest doubles matches to forge out a 7-2 women't tennis victory over Pacific in a Northwest Conference match on Saturday afternoon at the Scotford Tennis Center.
Pacific fell to 6-8 with the loss and to 4-5 in the NWC. Whitworth is now 5-10 on the season and 4-6 in conference play.
Bella Hoyos edged
Kaitlyn Lomartire in the match of the day at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8, and the Boxers were also edged at No. 4 when
Kanani Kea lost to K.C. McConnell, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). The Boxers picked up singles victories on court two with
Danielle du Plooy (6-3, 6-2) and at No. 3 when
Chantelle Baclay topped Jenny Adams, 6-4, 6-4.
But a pair of close doubles matches and all three tandem scores went to the Pirates to make the final difference. Lomartire and du Plooy fell to Hoyas and Adams on court one (8-6) and Baclay and Kea lost a screamer to McConnell and Paige Rohrback, 9-7.
"It was quite a battle, but when you drop all four tight ones, the match is not going to go your way," said Boxer head coach
Brian Jackson. "Hopefully we can learn from this and move forward."
That chance will come quickly, as Pacific will travel to Walla Walla for a match-up with No. 25 nationally ranked Whitman on Sunday. Start time is 10 a.m.
