FOREST GROVE, Ore. – A late spot kick conversion by junior
Weli Alamillo not only earned Pacific a 2-1 victory over Pacific Lutheran in a second extra time period, but gave Pacific its first weekend sweep of the Tacoma schools since the 2010 season.
Â
The Lutes got the scoring started when Clint Absher recovered a misplayed ball and dribbled into the 18-yard box, where he was able to squeeze a shot between the outstretched hands of Pacific sophomore
Leyton Thommasen (Des Moines, Wash.) and the cross bar in the 38th minute.
Â
Roughly three minutes later, Pacific sophomore
Keilian MacCulloch (Williamstown, Ontario, Canada) lofted a ball over the top of the Lutes backline and found sophomore
Keola Norton (Kahalu'u, Hawaii). Norton corralled the pass and tucked a shot inside the goalpost.
Â
After the opening half ended tied 1-1, the Boxers and Lutes saw their defenses shine with Thommasen highlighting the defensive play on the pitch with a pair of saves. In the 73rd minute, it looked as though Pacific Lutheran's Bennett Bugbee might score on an Olimpico, but Thommasen pounced and punched the ball clear.
Â
The Boxers sustained back-to-back corner kicks from the Lutes before Norton fired a shot off the crossbar, in what would be the last true offensive threat of regulation for either team.
Â
Only one shot was recorded in the first period of extra time, but it was a memorable one as freshman
Robert Nurmi (Gig Harbor, Wash.) hit a volley off the near post in the 99th minute.
Â
Pacific jumped on the attack in the second period of extra time, forcing PLU goalkeeper Cole Weaver into two early saves. Following a pair of Weaver saves, Alamillo drew a foul in the 18-yard box before lining up for a penalty kick, which he fired by Weaver for his second goal of the season.
Â
Thommasen tallied five saves in net for Pacific, while Norton placed four shots on frame on the offensive end.
Â
Pacific's weekend sweep of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran is the first since October 30 and 31, 2010. That weekend, similar to this weekend, resulted in 2-1 victories over PLU and a 1-0 victory over Puget Sound.
Â
The Boxers travel to Willamette on September 24, for a 2:30 scheduled kickoff against the Bearcats in Salem, Ore.
