FOREST GROVE, Ore. – It didn't come until the 109th minute, but the Pacific women's soccer team picked up a game-winning goal in the second period of extra time from senior
Breezy Brookbank to topple rival Linfield 1-0 at Hanson Stadium.
Â
The opening period of regulation saw the Boxers fire off six shots, forcing Linfield's Sarah Bailey into three saves. Brookbank (Burien, Wash.) threatened the goal in the 10th minute, but saw her shot blocked by a Wildcat defender.
Â
Linfield opened the second period on the attack, earning four corner kicks over a five-minute span, resulting in a pair of shots that did not reach Pacific's sophomore goalkeeper
Kailey Hifumi (Mililani, Hawaii). Â
Â
The Wildcats attack slowed as the period advanced, with momentum swinging Pacific's way as senior
Holly Chang-Northway (Eugene, Ore.) fired off a pair of shots toward goal. The second of Chang-Northway's back-to-back shots came in the 72nd minute and was left just high of the cross bar.
Â
After time expired on regulation, the two sides took to the pitch for the first period of extra time and soon after the opening whistle saw a Linfield header placed on frame. Hifumi handled the header by Mary Cait Moriarty before the Boxers' keeper helped spring the Pacific attack going the other way.
Â
Sophomore
Emily Thompson (Orange County, Calif.) took a pair of shots in the first period of extra time, including one that was saved by Bailey, before the 100th minute expired.
Â
Extra time period two again saw Pacific on the attack, but it looked like nothing was destined for the back of the net until Brookbank sprung free in the 109th minute and beat Bailey one-on-one for her third game winning goal of the season.
Â
Pacific returns to Hanson Stadium on Saturday for a noon kickoff against the No. 17 Pacific Lutheran Lutes.
