FOREST GROVE, Ore. — A goal from sophomore
Robert Nurmi was not enough for the Boxers on Senior Day, as a late surge by Whitworth led to a 2-1 Pirates victory at Ledbetter Field at Hanson Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Nurmi (Gig Harbor, Wash.) opened the scoring for the Boxers (8-8-1, 5-7-1 NWC) in the 57th minute when sophomore
Woodey Greer (Sandy, Utah) sent a ball downfield that was corralled by senior
Matt Kimball (Tigard, Ore.) who fed Nurmi for the goal.
The Pirates (10-7-1, 8-4-1 NWC) drew even in the 78th minute when Jonah Snyder converted a penalty kick, bringing the score to 1-1.
Whitworth tallied the winner in the 88th minute when Austin Cassity assisted on a Daniel Alvarez goal.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN... Alvarez netted a late winner on the final attacking try for either team in the 88th minute.
STAT OF THE GAME... Nurmi's goal was his fifth of the season, giving the Boxers two scorers with five or more goals for the first time since 2014. Kimball and Nurmi's combined 12 goals match that of Ian Farley and Mark Watson in 2014.
NEXT UP... The Boxers close out the 2017 season on Saturday at George Fox, with kickoff scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
