Cal Lutheran scored the final seven points en route to a 52-50 win over the Pacific University women's basketball team on Saturday night in Santa Cruz, California.
The Boxers (0-2) held a 50-45 lead with 4:21 left in the fourth quarter on a
Courtney Carolan (Spokane Valley, Wash.) lay-up.
Alexa Hinkley (Portland, Ore.) and
Megan Wesel (Winchester, Calif.) each had eight points to lead Pacific in the loss. Plus, Carolan added six points and a team-high eight rebounds for Pacific.
The Regals (2-0) tied the game at 50 and for the seventh time when Grace Derksen hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds to go. Kayla Watterson and Kailee Yan each went one for two from the free-throw line after a pair of last-second opportunities by Pacific. Derksen finished as the top scorer with 10 points.
Cal Lutheran stretched its three-point halftime lead to eight, 39-31 until the Boxers ended the quarter on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 41.
Jenee Brown (Kailua, Hawaii) hit one of two free throws to put Pacific back in front, 42-41, for the Boxers' first lead since the opening seconds of the third quarter. The Boxers held the lead until the game-ending run by Cal Lutheran.
Pacific will wrap up its weekend in California when they face host UC Santa Cruz on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
