Boxers Fall to Evergreen State, 65-53

Evergreen State scored seven of the first nine points to lead from nearly start to finish en route to a 65-53 win over Pacific University women's basketball in Olympia.

The Boxers (0-5) were led by junior Liana Tanaka (Kahului, Hawaii) scored a career-best – nine of which in the first half – 18 points in the loss. Joining Tanaka in double figures was junior Jenee Brown, who added 10 points

The Geoducks (1-2) got a 22-point, 10-rebound effort from Cayla Jones in the win. She was joined in double figures by Deidra Miller, who scored 10 points. Evergreen State shot 41.7% (25-for-60) and 92.4% (13-for-14) from the free-throw line.

The Boxers cut the deficit to five on a pair of occasions in the second half. Pacific had cut the deficit to 45-40 on a Tanaka lay-up with 4:37 left in the third quarter. Then, the host Geoducks scored the next seven points to push the lead to double digits for nearly the rest of the contest.

Defensively, Pacific limited the Geoducks to just two 3-pointers for the game and 16.7% (2-for-12) shooting from the field in the fourth quarter. Another defensive highlight for Pacific was sophomore Alexa Hinkley (Portland, Ore.), who had three blocked shots for the third time in five games.
