Double Double by Collins Leads Pacific Women's Basketball to Win Over Occidental

Senior Kaela Collins (Snohomish, Wash.) recorded her first career double double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to lead the Pacific University women's basketball team to a 60-55 win over Occidental.

The Boxers (1-9) went into the halftime break with a six-point halftime deficit before a decisive 22-3 run in the period. Trailing by eight, 34-26 with 8:53 mark, the Boxers turned it up a notch, both offensively and defensively. A tenacious Pacific defense limited Occidental to just three points in the final 8:53 of the quarter and outscored the Tigers by a 22-5 margin in the quarter.

In addition to the double double by Collins, Carly Kakuda (Honolulu, Hawaii) had a career-high 13 points on the strength of three 3-pointers.

The Tigers (5-3) were led by Tala Ismail and Triana Anderson, who had 17 and 14 points, respectively.

After building its lead to as large as 11 in the fourth quarter, the Tigers cut the deficit to two, 56-54 with :53 left when Ismail hit a 3-pointer.

On the Boxers' next possession, Charli Elliott (Seattle, Wash.) grabbed a key offensive rebound with :19 left that forced Occidental to foul. Elliott finished the game with nine rebounds. The Boxers' Ashley Jones (Anthem, Ariz.) made a pair of free throws to stretch the margin back to four, 58-54, with :18 left.

Next, the Tigers made one of two free throws with :08 left after missing a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to three. Again, Occidental had to foul and they sent Collins to the line, who drained a pair of free throws to seal the win.

Next, Pacific will face Concordia (Ore.) in an exhibition game on Thursday, Dec. 28 at 6 p.m. in Portland. After the game, the Boxers will return to the rigors of the Northwest Conference, where they will travel to face No. 9 Whitman (Friday, Jan. 5) and Whitworth (Saturday, Jan. 6).
